I'm sorry ....I don't know a lot about computers, however, I need a laptop that I can use with statistics software for research. and is fairly durable for dragging about the environment.

I'm looking for a notebook with,

preferably a centrino with (what's a good company):

* at least 1.6 Ghz and 60 GB
* dedicated graphics card
* wireless inernet capability and a modem
* dvd rw and cd rw.
* good battery price

Does any where I could find one from a reputable (with very good sales na good cust service) outlet that sells such notebooks Without software...but ready for software? I have XP and Office I can load onto it.

Thanks soooo much in advance!!

Hi,
Thanks so much for replying! Looks and weight are not as much of a consideration as price and durability (physically and electronics) are ....less than a grand Ideally, around $600 would be great, but probably unrealistic -- thats why I was hoping to find one sans software. The dedicated graphics card is of a lower priority than an economical price and usability for at least a few years to come, I don't know how to judge probable timelines in obsolesence. I'm considering grad school and I am afraid of purchasing a notebook only to find it is too underpowered for software and the internet within a couple of years...does this just show my ignorance? Are all computers generally obsolete within a couple of years?

Also, do I go for DVD writers or Cd RW's? How fast is the trend toward DVD's?

Ditto on the Xtremenotebooks.

I did Dell since 1996 and they have changed big time for the worse as far as addressing issues and they tried the bait and switch on my recent online order. I tried this other company and it's like Dell used to be. They are just so accomodating and have great components for options. Matter of fact, the OWNER called me personally within an hour after my online order. I'm still waiting (15 days later) for one of Dell's Customer Care Texas reps to call me back with a resolve. Believe me I'm not holding my breath. Also, you don't have to get an OS with Xtremenotebooks either.

Hey Dell, asta la vista baby! I found a replacement for you!!!

San9,

That's a nice setup. Also the 512mb Ram is single stick which is great so you can add another one later.

If you can swing it with the bucks I would upgrade to a 60GB ATA 7200 rpm hard drive. It's only $120.00 more and now is the time to do it because you'll have this thing for a while. It should help to run a bit quicker during reads. Beg, Borrow or Steal.

Good Luck!
