Hello all,

I was just wondering if I could put a regular P4(desktop chip, not mobile) chip into a laptop that has a Celeron 2.2ghz chip in it. Someone told me that it would be the same socket processors I just want to get verification before I get elbow deep into anything.

Thanks in advance

they are the same s478 processors but for desktop processors are not tailored for low heat output..you might have an issue there...if anyone else can expand this please

I want to do the same thing with a laptop. mobile celeron 2.4 to a desktop pentium 2.4 Also the manufactor says this laptop will only take as high as a P4 2.4 It would be nice to go higher than that.

Is it possible you use desktop P4 2.4ghz? Is is possible to put the highest P4 available?

I believe your right about the heat issue. It seems these mobil chips (at lease mine) run so slow even when not on batteries (running on batteries is unbearable). I have a duron 900mhz around that runs fast than my celeron 2.4

What kind of laptop is it? Many times the chip is not replaceable in laptops, especially the small form factor ones.

I don't know if your exaggerating or not, but if not then something is seriously wrong with your setup, probably an OS virus/spyware, slow hard drive, or lack of memory issue.

My laptop is an ashton digital, also my boss has same model but his has a P4 2.4. It is removable I do know that.

Yes I probably am exaggerating too much, but it does seem slow. I though maybe it was typical for a celeron. I have 512mb memory, and 40gb harddrive which I'm not sure but I bet it is about 5600 rpm.

My laptop is a hp ze4530us, it has a celeron 2.2ghz. How much of a heat issue would a desktop P4 cause? As long as it won't burn up I'm all for it.

He's probably not doing to much exaggerating. MY grandfather has a Dell with a 2.3ghz Celeron. That thing is a dogggg. I cannot believe Intel can sleep at night ripping off people with those chips. Seems like it can barely play a dvd. It takes forever for pictures to load. The same for Excel files and even loading the Excel program and Microsoft Money 2004. Even he can notice a difference between that lappy and his desktop 1600+ Athlon XP. HE says the XP feel alot faster and snappier.

I was looking at some benches of the Celerons and they are aweful. They scale even worse. Looked like only a 2% increase in performance with a 400mhz clock speed hike. 2.0ghz compared to 2.4ghz. I didn't look at all of them to see if that was the case with most or all of the benches.

Just my opinion with some facts thrown in.

When a Duron 1.6 can beat a 2.6 Celeron in alsomost every bench, thats pathetic, so I would say the problem is Intel.

In a desktop system, it is very clear.

in a Dell notebook - unless it is top-of-the-line - the HD is slow and the O/S is bogged down with "Dell Crap".

I'd go so far as to say the HD is a much bigger bottleneck then the CPU. :p

A 1Ghz P3 M Notebook is PLENTY fast for anything but graphics; the 2.4Ghz Celeron is not slower.

If it takes "forever to load" or can "barely play a DVD", the problem is NOT the CPU.

Then you have a system plagued with spyware or a virus, because even a high end P2 system will playback a dvd smoothly. And slow loading programs is always related due to a lack of memory usually related to a bloated system, combined with a slow hard drive. Please let the people here help you troubleshoot your system if you can't do it yourself.
