I can't remember the last time I've seen anyone on-the-go plug in their notebook into a surge protector. I've seen dozens of people just plug them into regular wall outlets. I did the same and I never thought about it until now. Is there not much to worry about or should I bring along a mini surge protector with me?

Better safe than sorry when it comes to expensive mobile equipment. I love the little APC notebook surge protector. It just velcro attaches to the laptop power brick and you're good to go.

I bought a Tripplite Traveller (~$20) or so. It is rated to block a surge of 1050 Joules, and it has 2 sockets to boot. I bought this one because it has a retractable wall plug and is thus somewhat more compact than other portable surge protectors.
