Notebook Speakers???

Not sure why you need the USB connection. You can get cheap speakers at Radioshack or any electronics store that are battery operated. I personally dont know of any USB speakers at all, and as for battery operated... I think your best bet would be to use your regular laptop speakers when you are on the go, and use standard wall-plug speakers when you are sitting around somewhere. You could just get really small plug-in speakers that can double on battery power... I dunno
 
I use the Benwin SP691/USB speakers with my lappy, they sound great for cheap speakers! They tap their power off of a USB port & get audio from my earphone jack. I like that I can use them on battery power or with my lappy's power supply, this means: no extra AC power brick to carry along! You can buy em here.
