notebook reverting to a certain state on its own

I have been dealing with a strange problem with a computer. The device is a HP Probook 6455b notebook. It is running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit One aspect to note about it is that it has a OCZ solid state hard drive.

Recently it started having a software problem. I would fix the problem and it would be fine until it was turned off. When it gets turned off and back on, it reverts back to the state where the problem exists. I have figured out that it is reverting back to a specific date and time. I have tried to do a system restore to before the problem started. But it still reverts back to that point. Then I tried doing a clean install of Windows 7. I chose to do a custom installation and deleted all partitions. I then created a new partition (maximum size). When creating the C: partition, it also created a 100 MB "system reserved" partition, which is normal. I then formatted the C: partition. I then let the Windows 7 installation proceed. It did the usual 2-3 restarts and then got to the desktop. I installed some drivers and it restarted couple more times. I then turned it off. When I turned it back on later, it had reverted back. The next thing I tried was trying to install Windows XP (thought was to install a totally different OS and see what happens). But when copying files off the Win XP CD, it showed a blue screen. The stop error was 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I have not been able to find anything conclusive on this error stop error.

The last thing I tried was to boot into a third party partition editor utility known as gparted. I deleted all partitions and created a new partition. I formatted the partition and applied all actions. I then shut down the notebook and turned it back on about 5 minutes later. It had reverted back.

I am not sure if this is a hardware or software issue. But I think it is hardware (something with the hard drive), so I am posting this under "General Hardware".

Anybody have any ideas.

Does it just have the one hard drive? If it has 2 then maybe it is booting from the second drive sometimes.

If there is just one drive, are you sure you didn't leave a hidden restore / recovery partition in place?

The notebook has just the one solid state hard drive. Regarding any hidden restore / recovery partitions, I have tried to format the hard drive a few times (couple attempts of trying to reinstall windows 7 and then the steps I completed with gparted). Also, any recovery partition should take the laptop back to its factory state and it should not do that on its own every time it is powered on. Instead it is going to a point in time about a couple months ago. It is reverting to around 6:15 PM on Friday January 21, 2011. At that time, the user did a normal shutdown after using it throughout the day.

And a restore would have to be done through windows. Should not happen on its own when powered on. I have checked the BIOS and everything else outside of Windows as well.

This is quite strange. I have called HP technical support and they could not tell me anything. They got me to restore default settings in BIOS and then try reinstalling again. Which I did and it still reverted back. They suggested I call Microsoft Support. I have a good feeling that Microsoft will say that they can't assist me and I should call the device manufacturer (HP). Also, there will be a charge with Microsoft Support.

By "reverted", do you mean that everything changes back to its previous state? In other words, if you format the drive, will the computer suddenly go back to having Windows and all applications installed?

If so, it sounds like you could have a problem with the SSD. It could be accepting write operations, but never actually committing them to the flash, thus not actually changing anything. What specific model of SSD is in the system?

Yes, that is exactly what is happening. No matter what is done, after being turned off and then back on Windows 7 loads as it was on January 21, 2011 at 6:15 PM.

So, is that actually possible with a SSD where it will not commit the changes? The SSD is a OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 2.5".

Yep, it is definitely possible that the flash is locked in read-only mode when the drive controller thinks that it isn't. Try doing a secure erase to reset the drive completely. If this doesn't work, looks like you're in for an RMA.

I have the exact same issue! I thought I was going crazy as my Outlook OST file kept reverting back to the 14th March which required me to delete it and recreate it.

I will also try doing a secure erase over the weekend and see what happens.

Is there any particular method on doing this with a Corsair Force 240GB?
