Please forgive my post count: I have just converted from lurker to beggar
Here's the skinny:
Come July, I will have approx. $1000 set aside for a computer. Initially, I had intended to create a solid mid-range gaming rig (plans were amd3000 (winnie), 1gb, 6600GT pci, etc etc), but I have decided to purchase a notebook for college.
I have the following questions that I beseech of the knowledge banks
:
-What brands are considered good these days?
- I have not had a notebook for sometime. I know that I will have to buy from either a best buy/circuit city or possibly newegg if they have what you guys think i need. Whether it is dell, hp, ibm, I would like to know what folks are carrying around with the most success.
- I really would like to keep the price under $1000 so that I do not need to finance, but if i am told that a solid notebook is at 12-1300, i will eat ramen noodles for a while.
-Size is not too big of an issue, but i would rather carry a notebook around, not a microwave.
-How upgradable are notebooks these days?
-Am I essentially locked into what I purchase for the next 4 years or can upgrades improve the longevity?
-Can a notebook today support a game such as the forthcoming GTA: San Andreas? I know that the system specs are going to be higher than VC. If I pick up the FPS urge again (far cry, battlefield), I can use my current cpu.
-This notebook will be mainly used for papers, internet, and some data storage, but i would love to relieve some stress between classes with GTA.
-Can a 5.1 theater system (klipsch) be simultaneously hooked up to a TV and my notebook? If not, do adapters exist to make it happen?
-I would love to be able to use a nice HTIAB for both my DVDs on the TV and 5.1 encoded music stored on a computer.
-Also, what are the choices for a docking station for a notebook?
-For an additional harddrive, printer/fax/scanner, and speakers
I appreciate any advice: I have done some research work, but would rather keep that in my head than bore you guys with links
thanks
