My wife & I have a pretty go grip on the desktop. What the parts are & how to build one, but notebooks are different.
Could somone please explain a few major differneces between desktop & notebooks, Please? Oter than size. Hope I 'm not being to vague on the question. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Seann

Laptops are usually a lot more proprietary than desktops. For desktops, you can get most things to follow the ATX form factor - motherboards, cases, power supplies, all drive bays are either 5 1/4" or 3 1/2", things like that. Laptops are not. They are propriatary, most manufactuers use certain bay sizes that aren't universally compatible. Cases are usually proprietary, too. And on top of that, you can't just go out and "buy" a display like you can with a desktop.

In short, you can't effectively build a laptop.

You might aswell give up now and buy an IBM, Toshiba, Dell, whatever you like.

But the first thing to do when thinking about buying a notebook is too realize what you will be using it for.

This is, perhaps, the best advice you'll ever get when it comes to purchasing a laptop.

it is possible that within the next five years, there will be a trend with DYI laptop assembly. I think some companies, especially the oversea OEM hardware makers will come out with module based parts, meaning every components will be compatabile with other components. and the display will be pluged in to the main base module.

(i remember telling my friends back in 94, that there should be comp cases that are see through, so ppl can mode them. they said i was a dork b/c i want to see the inner components of pc. funny, random thought)
