Reflecting rising component costs, notebook prices are climbing

It looks like there is a lot of posts in General regarding buying notebooks. It seems notebooks were at there absolute lowest prices November (when I bought mine) through last month.

HOWEVER, you'd better hurry if you are considering a purchase:

<< Notebook prices will likely snap out of months of decline to rise in April due to increasing prices of key components and a general pick-up in notebook demand. Some models were already priced upward by US$100, market observers say. >>

Which components? Everything from chips, drives to LCDs are going down in price. Is nvidia and ati at "fault" here for their mobile chips?

Actually, I think the notebook makers - especially Dell - are tired of making very little margin compared with previous "fat" years.

Also,

<< lately tight TFT LCD supply and increasing memory and battery prices have prompted manufacturers to reconsider their pricing. >>

<< In a contrast to its usual low-price push, Dell has jacked up the starting price of its budget SmartStep series from US$899 in early April to $949. The Inspiron series targeted at the consumer market also has seen prices inching up. For instance, prices for the high-end Inspiron 8200 operating on the P4-M processor jumped to US$1,699 from US$1,599 earlier this month. >>

They are doing this because they can. Head's up . . . get your notebook soon if you have been waiting for further price drops. ;)

Bah. Once the Tablet PC's are out, I expect we may see traditional notebook prices drop or stay low.

I bought one in Nov as well. I checked back in a month to see if I could cash in on Dell's price guarantee (cashed in $250 on a P2 266 once).. when I looked, the price was actually about $50 higher if you did not count the free upgrades I got. It stayed at the price I bought it for months with only minor upgrades in components.

Tablet PCs are out . . . we're just waiting for WinXP Tablet PC O/S. From the looks of things - check out the latest article in PCMag - it'll be quite awhile until Tablet PCs are standardized and universally accepted (if ever).

We won't see XP Tablet until late this year and any effect on the notebook market until much later. I'm talking about notebook purchases this year.
