In October I am going to Disney World with my family.
We will be taking two digital cameras (Nikon d70)
When used in the burst mode I've been known to take over 500 to 600 pictures a day of my grand kids. My daughter does the same.
Thus we need a way to load, burn cd's, clear camera memory and s on. Plus I need a way to communicate to the outside world to check on other personal things.
I know NOTHING about laptops.
I want to buy a laptop at Best Buy. I have over $300 in gift cards and other freebies there. and want to use them.
I found this unit.
Laptop
I like it because of the 2 gig of ram and it says is has a higher capacity battery (12 cell) plus the 160 gig hard drive.

Would anyone care to comment on the laptop?

For what you have in mind, that HP laptop would make an excellent travelling darkroom. I do similar things when travelling. I used an older HP (dv1000) but with the 160 GB drive. I now use a 200 GB drive and carry a small external drive for backup archiving of digital imagery. With the D70 you should get a small USB Reader/Writer. Don't bother connecting the camera to off load and clear. Just remove the memory chip and MOVE the files from it to your HDD. That clears the memory chip. With a couple of backup chips, you can be off taking more pics while that off load is happening.

Bottom line - good choice, and the BestBuy certificates makes it more so. 🙂

 
so you can get that for $700? Go for it! That's very very nice and has everything you need, pretty much 🙂

HP's build quality is pretty good too, so it'll survive all the moving around on your trip 🙂
 
That will be a great choice for what you are doing. I recommend getting Picasa (free download, get it from google) for your photo organization.

I forgot about the Picasa download. I'll go to Google and download it into my desktop later tonight.
Will adding a external card reader be any faster on downloading and clearing the memory card from the Nikon d70?
Also,,, can I take the laptop on the airplane with me? It's a 2 hour flight and I definitely won't use it. I'm more concerned about the airline sending it to Alaska instead of Orlando!!!!! LOLOL

You can take your laptop with you at the airport and of course at the xray machine will not hurt your laptop much. TSA will ask you to open laptop baggage to make sure you are not carry a bomb....also make sure you recharge your battery before flight time so you can watch dvd movie or listen to a music. I used to bring my laptop with me for 8 hours flight twice and I was able to play game with it.
Oh I forgot to add make sure to turn off wireless before flight take off.

Rottie,,, thanks for the idea. We are taking our 2 grand children to Disney World and watching a few childrens shows while flying will keep them occupied.

When you say that the x-ray machine will not hurt the laptop much,,, I assume that the x-rays and static and being near high voltage "might" do some damage to the data on the hard drive. Am I right or wrong?

It is one of those things that could hurt the laptop, but to the best of my recollection no one's laptop has ever been damaged by the xray machine. Plus the new ones that they are using are even less likely to damage them.

xray didn't damage my laptop harddriven at all twice before and I hope it will not happen in the future.
 
I have flown many thousands of miles with laptops, and they have never been bothered in the least by the screening machines.

The normal procedure today when you approach the X-Ray machine is to remove your laptop from the case and place it in one of the plastic trays. That's where I also put my watch, beltbuckle and shoes. The case goes through separately with power adapter, cord, and any accessories. It is not a problem except it can get a bit hectic trying to do several things at once.

Always keep an eye out for you laptop and regroup things on the other end - yeah, and put your shoes back on.

Several airlines have power connections for laptop adapters in certain seats. For long flights, they are essential unless you have a spare battery. (I'm talking 8 to 11 hours, like LAX to Frankfurt.)

While HP makes good machines, I would recommend you consider the placement of the headphone jacks.

I bought this laptop and when I took a flight...the headphone jack had to be plugged in the front!!! As you know, seats in a plane are tight and thus, had to make space in the front for this jack otherwise it was sticking in my belly.

Also, when I work at the office, I like to attach speakers and listen to music...guess what?? the speakers connect through the headphone jack so now I have cables running from the front of the computer to the speakers....not terribly clean look and also comes in my way!

Not sure which genius decided to put that jack there but it just sucked. Just an FYI. If you do not do anything with the headphone jack...buy it.
