Notebook Mods?

Howdy everyone 🙂

Just curious to know if any1 has gotten into notebook modding (internal or external)? Done anything cool to a notebook, or added something to it that was not meant for it?

If you have, do you have any pictures to share?

thanks 😉

Anything... paint jobs, cooling solutions, etc.

I am thinking of taking apart a notebook and doing a custom paint job... still deciding on the images I'd like to paint on it 🙂

Well, I was thinking some kind of acrylic...

I was looking around and saw some nice plastic paints in an autoshop, they can create a mat finish, or a very high gloss finish, and stick very well to plastic. There are a lot of colors to choose from as well.

I was thinking of Chevy Engine Red as one color scheme

Someone here did have custom logos made for laptops sometime back...to replace the original logos...

Are they spray paint kind or the one you'll have to use the brush?

Check out polygfx.com (I think that's it); they have some cool laptop skins that might float your boat. Hell of a lot easier, too.

They come in an Aerosal can, so that would mean the laptop would have to be dissasembled, and the pieces would then be painted and dried.

Psychosylph thanks for the info, will check them out 🙂

I read about a person who removed the opaque plastic that was directly behind the translucent apple logo on the lid of their ibook. When they turned on the laptop, the apple glowed due to the light from the back of the LCD (most LCD's let light out the back).

Now that sounds like a cool mod, a bit risky (maybe) but cool!

Am I missing something here
Dont they do that anyway?

Wow, totally missed this post.

About 3 or 4 years ago I bought a couple of old 486s that my work was getting rid of and took the cases from the game Battleship and cut them up and added additional plastic so that they'd look like Mattels game Battleship. One was in Red, one was Blue, and they had the Battleship logos on them. Mattel was selling a Hotwheels PC package and a Barbie PC package... these were real Desktop PCs that looked had a Barbie theme (pink Case, the logo on the front) and a Hotwheels case that had hotwheels liste on it, in funky colours. I thought this would be a perfect match, I sent Mattel Pictures of these things because I thought, hey, maybe they'll want to buy my idea. About 2 weeks later I recieved a cease and desist letter and was told that I couldn't use the Battleship logo... how useless is that? I can't even show them off to anyone other than friends... and a 486 is pretty useless as anything other than a paper weight, or playing solitaire... I now have a 3 month old son so he'll likely recieve them when he's old enough to take care of them... still... bugged me no end. Careful how you mod is the moral of this story.

I was going to say the same thing. All the recent ones do that. Maybe it was one of the old makeup-compact iBooks? Did those have the glowing apple?

Cool mod! That was a great idea, and it's too bad that they didn't respond in a nicer way 🙁

So far I have a spare notebook LCD cover that I have bombed with some silver lacquer, but it seems too shiny! It reflects light... I didn't want it to be that shiny ;p I'm just toying with different types of aerosal paints to see what the effect is...

Well I just finished painting my notebook a nice new frosted silver 🙂

It does make it look a lot nicer, and newer 😉 I used some silver metallic lacquer for highlights and a nice frosted gray paint for the case... got a wee bit high off of the fumes tho 😉

Remember people, work in a well ventillated area! *lol*

I will throw some pictures up and post a link if anyone is interested 🙂

Anyone know of any places (online or b&m) that can make a sticker from a picture or image you have? A friend of mine made some sweet logos that I would like to put on my laptop when i get one.

PICS OR BAN! 😛 🙂

If you're going to take a case off and paint it, use vinyl dye. It's available from automotive stores. Pretty well known that it's the shiznit for plastics, as is Krylon Fusion.

I am interested 🙂
I'm just wondering how you did it? full disassembly?
I really want to paint mine, but it is quite new and don't want to have to take it apart as the warranty will then be out the window and we don't want that...any good masking tapes that are safe to stick on the screen?
