I have an older HP laptop, I think it's an Athlon XP 1.2GHZ, 256mb RAM, Windows XP...

My Grandpa gave it to me for high school graduation a couple of years back. When I was using it for college the hard drive completely died. I just shoved it under my bed and went on using my desktop. I popped open the laptop the other day to see what was going on, just out of curiousity and I found a couple of the HD pins were broken.

So, now I'm gonna replace the HD and give the laptop to my girlfriend for her to use for school.

My question is, are notebook hard drives manufacturer specific or can I get any brand 2.5in notebook hard drive?

Thanks

Depends on the height of the HD more than the brand. Any brand should work fine. If you can fit either a 9.5mm or a 12.5mm, you should be set for the most part.

I was htinking about buying THIS hard drive.

I noticed it said "Interface - ATA-7"

Not quite familiar...

On price watch it says it's for Hewlett Packard so I guess it's ok?

Some notebooks use a custom adapter for the HD's. They use standard 2.5" HD's but it is connected to an adapter which then connects to the notebook. That should be the only pitfall you face. I was troubleshooting a HP laptop and ran into that problem.

The connector pins on the hard drive face down and connects straight up and down, is that pretty standard or is that an HP thing?
