Notebook HD Cable Question...

Armitage

I have an adapter to connect a notebook HD to a standard IDE cable. But which side of the drive should the power connector go on? Which side should the red wire on the IDE connector got to? The master/slave jumpers are on the right when looking at the back of the drive with the label side up:

Thanks

I forget since mine is at the office, but you orient it so the connector to the regular IDE cable is above the drive, if that helps?

All of the adapter I have seen always have pin 1 marked on the PCB. Make sure that the IDE cable is lined up with pin 1 on the laptop HDD. Pin 1 on the HDD is next to the master/slave jumpers. Don't worry about plugging it in upside down, I and others have done that and the drive simply isn't recognized. Just don't shift the drive over so that some pins are not connected. At best you fry your adapter, at worst your drive.

Ok, thanks. I've gotten similar advice about flipping it being no big deal. FWIW, my adaptor doesn't have an exposed PCB, and pin 1 isn't marked 🙁
