Notebook display

Has anyone ever toyed with the idea of using the display from an old notebook as a secondary monitor for a desktop system? Would it actually be possible, or practical?

I posted a message about the same thing here a few days ago, but there wasn't any interest. I'm very interested in doing the same thing with a Sony Vaio display. The motherboard is blown and Sony wants $700 to replace it. So I have this nice 800X600 display panel, but not knowing much about how to power the display, I'm at a loss on how to start. I know the panel uses a Neomagic (think thats it) diplay chip and I have the panel removed from the old case. But I don't know if I need a digital setup or your standard VGA. Again, I just have the panel and my multimeter. Maybe if we start exchanging ideas, we'll get some hardware wizards to help us out.
