Notebook display problem

I have a Sony PCG-GRX600 notebook, its a huge notebook with a 16-17 inch display with a 1600*1200 resolution. some days ago the display died, but looking at it I realized only the lamp that backlights the display broke. It didn't comlpletely break, when I turn the laptop on or change resolutions it lights up, but then dies, in the same manner that a fluorescent light (the fluorescent tube types) does when it's broken (it turns on, then off, on for a few seconds, off again and that's it, it stays off).
I want to know if it can be fixed without changing the entire screen (I know the usual way to fix creen problems is to change the entire screen, too expensive).

I'm hoping someone can tell me the problem might be in the circuitry (sp?), and not the lamp itself (if it's the lamp i suppose i have to change the entire screen)....

Suggestions? Anybody?

The backlight is like a flourescent tube - and they do burn out and require replacement. That is not a user replaceable item, and requires that the display be opened up. Check with Sony.

They will probably tell me I have to change the entire screen...
Is there any way I could get a spare backlight myself and change it? I thing I have the skills to do it (I already disassemled (sp?) the notebook and the display, didn't separate the backlight from the screen but I could do it, I decided it was best to wait for an answer from the Anand Forum...)
My biggest problem is that I live in Argentina... I checked how much a screen replacement would cost, around 1000 USD... I cannot pay that much.
