any ideas on notebook CPU?

need it for games, encoding, video production, and workstation precision

also, would a quadro vs a 6800 vs x800 make a difference if I get either one of them?
 
It's going to be used during college, so 3D intense games like HL2, BF2, anything that's out in the market right now. As for workstation apps, I'm talking about stuff like multimedia development, Photoshop, movie creation software, etc.
 
Well, your only real option would be a Pentium-M based system. There's no way I would buy a Pentium 4 laptop unless you never intended to pick it up and take it anywhere, let alone use the battery.

There are some Athlon 64 notebooks, but none of them (except I think a couple of extremely expensive ones) have PCI-E graphics solutions, so you're stuck with a Mobility Radeon 9700 as the fastest video card available. The laptop I just bought in my signature will actually be very respectable in games.

As for workstation apps, the Pentium M will be slower for those that you mentioned, but that's the sacrifice you have to decide on.

What about P4's with EMT64?

And the P4s heat up WAY too much. Im running a Mobile P4 @ 3.06 GHz and it stays at 60C load while taking in pure cold air-conditioned air.
