Notebook CPU upgrade?

Was wondering if you can upgrade a cpu in a notebook. Im sure on some machines you can, but what about a compaq? If the bus and the socket are the same, will it work. The model is: Compaq 1201TA, Celeron 733mhz, 100mhz system bus. Was thinking about installing a Celeron 1.3ghz with a 100fsb. Compaq(or HP should I say) says it will not work. They gave me no reason why, just said it wont work. Any help would be appreciated.

1.3 definitely will not work because you can only use a coppermine cpu in your system and they top out at 1ghz. Remember that heat will increase greatly with coppermines as mhz increases so your fan will probably need to run a lot more often.

I didnt think it would work either, but thought it was worth a shot. I knew heat was an issue for sure. Compaq was not correct in their bus rating either, it is 66mhz, not 100. The notebook is not going to be used for gaming or anything cpu intensive so 766mhz should be fine. The biggest problem with it right now is the "ME!" Going to put 2000 or XP on it with more mem.

In that case you should invest money in a 7200rpm drive, you'll see a heck of a lot more performance benefit than a cpu upgrade. 700mhz is actually pretty decent speed if not gaming. I can't tell any difference between my P3-700 system and a centrino 1.6.

I dont know much about notebook hdds. I put a 40gb in a different compaq notebook and it was a real pain in the but tryin to install windows. Didnt know you could get a notebook drive with 7200rpm. Are the dimentions the same?

yeah they are. also 7200rpm drives produce more heat and is much louder.
