Built from scratch? I don't know if such a thing is possible, I know that most can't even be upgraded except for the ram, some allow Processor upgrades but as for video/graphics not to my knowledge. If you wanted to "build" a laptop, it may be possible to purchase junk parts and slap them together, at the very least it would be an experiment but i'm sure it's been tried and you could find out.

I've wondered the same thing myself and everything i've found thus far points to --> NO

If you find something different or anyone has more input I would like to know as well.

Much of the notebook world is still proprietary. Though it's not impossible, it is highly improbable. I mean, ever mom and pop stores have their own notebook brand now, so someone sells the generic parts. Still, I've got to believe you'll pay more for the computer by buying separately.

If you want to learn how to build and service them, buy a pre-built, take it apart, and put it back together. That should suffice. Heck, Dell's site shows you how.
