Notebook Battery Life Data

Hi, I'm currently looking at at two Asus notebooks: Z71V and the Z70V. They are pretty much the same spec but as I am trying to decide which one to get I was comparing their batter life lengths. But to my dismay almost every different webstore has a different projected battery life per laptop, and then a different projected life with a second modular battery installed in the drive bay. My question then is this, are there any resources online where people have actually done standardized testing on laptop rundown? I know that the battery life would very from the different hardware configurations but you could get a general idea of how the notebook performs while running a specific task, ie DVD viewing or running half-life.

Please tell me something like this exists! I really want to know which of these laptops gets better battery life.

well, my z71v under what i would consider normal usage gets anywhere from 3 to 3.5 hours while just using the standard battery. yeah, the 6.5 hour figure is BS and we all know that. even with the modular battery accessory you're never gonna get those numbers without turning most of the system off. but still, i love this lappy and would recommend it to anyone. from what i could guess, the z70v should get pretty much the same numbers, being that it is not all that different from the z71v

When you talk about "life," are you referring to the useful life of a battery (normally 3-5 years) or the time the battery can run the computer without being plugged in?

If the latter - a lot depends on what you are doing. Just plain computing with no audio or use of the DVD/CD drive, you get a given number of hours. Anything over 3 is good. If you are playing a movie where the drive and sound are used, it will be less.

I have a new DV1000 and two batteries. One is 6 cell, and the other 12 cell. The 6 cell runs up to maybe 2+ hours. The 12 cell is about 5 hours. (Based on actual run down tests.)

*grin* No kidding. How do they have it set up when they do those tests I wonder? Though my laptop was rated at 3.3hrs by Toshiba and even with WiFi and Winamp on I get 3 hrs, doing browsing etc, nothing real intensive. So maybe 6.5 is not al that far off for moderate use?

So here's an update, Asus website now loads the specs from the Z71V and under the battery header it has this:

Primary: Li-Ion 8/4 cells, 14.8V, 4400mAh, 65W battery pack
Secondary battery available (using modular bay)
Battery life 4 hours (6 hours with 2nd battery)
Charging time, 2.5 hrs Quick charge 90% (Power off) / 4hrs (Power on)
Battery low warning under Windows environmentEnters Save-To-Disk mode automatically if less than 5%) Battery life 5 hours (7 hours with 2nd battery)

So even their own specs say two different things.

From what I can tell the only difference between the Z71V and the Z70V is that the former has a Geforce 6600 and the latter has a ATI X600.

As it stands now I am probably leaning towards the Z70V because it looked like it will be lighter and have better battery life plus I don't need the 6600 graphics.

Dont buy the standard z70v. very soon, maybe even now depending on the retailer there's a 'refresh' model, the z70va which is coming out. it may cost a little bit more, but you're getting a carbon fibre body (which reduces weight over the z71v by ~1lb.), integraded bluetooth, a x700 as compared to what's in the current z70v, a sightly better screen and quad speakers.

......just wanted to let you know what's soon on the horizon

Do you know how soon this update will be released?

UPDATE:

Looks like it is already released but backordered most places. The carbon looks like it would be nice but wouldn't the X700 drain more battery?
