Notebook Battery Care

I was just wondering something about battery/power care for a notebook...Is is okay to leave it plugged in all the time even if the computer is turned off, or is it a bad thing to leave a notebook plugged in all the time. I'm talking in terms of, what effect would this have on the battery? Like usually I use the laptop while it is plugged in and then shut down and head to bed. Should I also be unplugging the power supply?
I know it seems like a weird question, but I just want to make sure I don't trash my battery or something.

Thanks in advance.

I am assuming you have a newer notebook with the Lithium Ion battery. If this is the case it is perfectly fine to leave your laptop plugged in all the time. There is no effect on the battery because the notebooks have a switching feature that stops trying to charge the battery after it is fully charged.
