Medion is a German PC maker whose been trying to get in the US market the past several years----No doubt if you do some back research, you'll find that they've built the Aldi "Black Fri" specials. From what I recall, they've had a good product, especially when you consider the price

Compaq 2100Z is cheapter. But can someboday tell me if Ati Mobility 7000 (64M shared memory) is better than S3 Savage in this lappy?

Yeah, Medion isn't a junk brand. Pretty decent for a retail deal if you don't need to play games (see below). Too bad it has half-of-even-a-GF2-MX400-performance integrated video. If this was even a IGP320M, it would be hot since the IGP320M is at least equal to a minimally acceptable Radeon 7000.

The integrated Savage8 runs at 140MHz, has a single pipeline with 2 texturing units, no T&L and doesn't even do trilinear (too slow to anyways). The graphics core is a DX5 era relic even though it's not a very old chipset. Bleh.

thanks pxc, so basically Ati mobility 7000 is better.

But Compaq 2100Z is 1.62" without USB2.0.

Oops, didn't read that, but yeah, the IGP320M laptops have much, much better 3D video than the Savage8. The new 9100 IGP will be really nice for integrated video.

The IGP320M has 1 pipeline with 3 texture units, 160MHz core speed and at least supports Hyper-Z (saves bandwidth). The speed difference over the Savage8 is bigger than it looks. The IGM320M can easily be 2x faster than the Savage8.

The 9100 IGP is a DX8.1 part (shaders + hardware T&L), 2 pipelines with 1 texture unit each at 300MHz, dual channel DDR northbridge and Hyper-Z II (desktop part... mobile part might be a little slower). The integrated chipsets aren't meant to be performance parts. The 9100 IGP is about the same speed as a 9200SE, ATi's slowest performing DX8.1 part.

hmmm, the LOWEST a 600M will get after rebates is high $900, which is about $250 more than this and the specs on this is very competitive with the 600m (minus the video card, which most people dont mind since niether this or the 600m will make good gaming machines)

Any idea of how good this laptop will be on battery life? Since it has a true Mobile processor I was thinking it might be a little better than average (average is about 15 minutes on my Dell lately :( )

my 2200+ hp evo, gets around 4hrs of dvd time, or a little over 3 hours when I work it, and just under or right at 3hrs of gaming, on an 8cell battery.

Getting 3-4 hours on an 8 cell battery is incredible (and I do mean that) for a 45W processor. Is that with 2 batteries? :p

Those HP Athlon XP-M 1.8GHz laptops are rated for 2-2.5 hours of battery life, lower than that when playing games.

2 hrs doesn't sound too bad on the battery life, but I was hoping it would be better... Guess the technology still isn't really there.

When the mobile 3d vid cards came out I promised myself I would pick a laptop up when they got a little higher frame rates to use a LAN party system. Over time though the reality has sunk in that it's probably not a lack of video card technology that is at issue, it seems more likely the lack of power (and too much heat).

With that in mind I have moved from considering a laptop as a portable gaming machine, to more of a tool to test, troubleshoot with, act as a back up to my other systems during reloads, a permanent cd-burner, etc.

With that in mind this seems like a good platform. I can load up Linux on it at least (love playing glines) and probably get some use out of it.

Thanks for the pointer.
