There is probably someone working at the Dallas distribution center who was supposed to intercept the package from the pool of undeliverable packages. Unfortunately for that person, a competent employee saw the package first and noticed that the address would be valid in Denton.

As far as the person being brave to drive the package to the police, the article doesn't go into much detail there. It's possible that the recipient first called the police before bringing it in.

Last I read/heard was the Police cleard themself of killing the dogs. Mind you they did not talk to the mayor or his MiL. They also did not examine the dogs either.

After that i think the mayor asked the FBI to come in. I can;t seem to find anything new since.

How much he actually served I don't know, nor if he was ever able to negotiate any probation instead of jail time.

I seriously doubt UPS has any drug sniffing dogs in their facilities. There's no way that they are going to stop the miles of conveyor because the dog points its nose at a box.

Not to mention that there are probably almost literally eleventy billion boxes going through UPS hubs at any one moment. I bet even getting the dogs close enough to the boxes would be hard.

I've pulled many a trailer from UPS distribution/sorting centers and they don't have dogs sniffing anything. That's not to say UPS doesn't have a team that travels to their different locations around the country randomly and check for drugs, and who's to say the government could also randomly check fedex/ups distribution centers. But UPS isn't.
