Note 8 or ipad pro 10.5?

Hi all,

Just after people's thoughts and opinions really. I'm not trying to start a flame war this, so don't take any offence 🙂

Basically, at the end of the month I will have the opportunity to get a new phone, or tablet. And I'm torn between 2 options. Either a galaxy note 8, or an ipad pro 10.5. And I don't know which to go for.

Whichever I get will be my main device for media consumption, apps, taking pictures, emails etc etc. In the case of the iPad I do have a phone I can use with it, purely for texts and phone calls. Everything else would be done on the iPad.

Both devices sim free are nearly the same price, hence the tough choice. I have both an android and an Apple account with loads of the same or similar apps on each, so that doesn't matter either.

Has anybody else had a similar situation? If so, what did you choose? Or if you were in a similar situation, what would you choose, and why?

Thank you

Ian

Obviously note in your case. No matter what you think now, lugging around an ipad all the time will simply not be possible most of the time, so you will be forced to do it on a crappy/er phone.

True, at work for example it would be phone only. But at home, and out with the family, maybe could take the iPad...? Have you ever used one on a day to day basis like that?

Thanks again

Ian

Forget it. Not only would you look ridiculous with an ipad during the family gathering, it would be wildly impractical having to have a bag and pulling it out all the time.

Not to mention texting.. it's not just for sending texts these days, it pictures and video and links. Better to have a capable phone.

Tablet is, i guess, ok for home usage. That's it. Even than, i much prefer a convertible laptop.

For the practicality of the keyboard? Not really bothered about a keyboard to be fair, it's the s-pen/apple pencil that's important to me. On my previous note 4 I used it alot, and I missed using something similar on an ipad I had the use of for a few weeks a little while back.

Looking like the note 8 is the way forward then 🙂

Thanks again

Ian

With Christmas coming up, the other half and 4 kids to buy for, it'll be a stretch to do that lol I'm just going to go with one or the other. The problem is which, altho I'm leaning more towards the note 8 at the min. Out of curiosity, do use your ipad when out and about, kinda thing?

Thanks

Ian

No, its strictly in home use. The note 8 is my daily do all device. The iPad pro 10.5 is my media device at home.

Well, if the stylus input is what you are really interested in, the s-pen beats the Apple Pencil hands down. Battery life alone is one major reason, being the s-pen doesn't have one. Also, storage of the stylus, too. Unless you buy a special case for the iPad Pro, there is no place to securely store the Pencil. So, unless you are married to the Apple Ecosystem(which you claim not to be), the Note 8 is your best choice. No sense in carrying 2 devices.

Not really married to either system, have loads of the same or similar apps and games in each tbh.

Stylus input and the camera are the main categories for me, I think. Big screen is obviously handy too 🙂

Thanks

Ian

Well, seems like you just gave yourself the best reasons to go with the Note 8 over the iPad. Note 8 boasts best in class camera & the s-pen is so far advanced in functionality and support over the Pencil, there is no comparison.

My Note 8 arrives today, so I am a little biased.....lol

Lol please post a user review after you've used it a few days, or post your first impressions etc etc, it'd be interesting to read. So aside from screen size being in the ipads favour, is there anything the iPad can do the note 8 can't?

Random one, has anyone tried flying a drone with a note device? I've tried a friend's drone on an ipad, that was quite good. Curious as to how the smaller screen of a note affects it tho, if at all. I suppose the increased resolution makes up for the smaller size?

Thanks again

I don't understand the choice, honestly. Both are great devices, but I don't see one substituting for the other.

I love my Note 8, but if I were doing a lot of drawing, media consumption/browsing, and had something else as a phone, I would want the iPad Pro for the larger screen.

It's great the Note 8 does most of the same things well... for a device of its size that you have with you at all times... but it's not a substitute if you need a full tablet experience. Same goes for any Phablet, IMO.

On the other hand, as said, the iPad pro makes for a crappy 'mobile device'. It's not a smartphone, so the Note is better for that.

I'm essentially after the best "one size fits all device". The best one for screen, camera, multimedia content, emails, Web browsing, emails etc etc. But it also has to be one I can take out and about with me when out with the family, visiting friends, that kinda thing. The 256GB ipad pro 10.5 with cellular is only £40 more than the note 8 sim free, here in the uk. Hence the difficult choice?

I couldn't see myself carrying around an iPad Pro when out and about. It would need to be something that fits in a pocket.

Not really. The Note8 bezels are nonexistent. The actual size of the Note8 is very similar to phablet phones from the past several years.

The Note8 fits fine in all my pant pockets.

It was a struggle to get the oneplus 5 in my pocket with some clothes, the note 8 is bigger. But that wouldn't be too much of a problem. I can't fit an ipad in my pocket lol 🙂

I mean, technically, but not by much.

The Note8 is 8mm taller and 0.7mm wider and 1.2mm thicker.

So less than a centimeter taller, and basically 1mm or less for the width and thickness difference.

Saying the Note8 is massively bigger is disingenuous.

I didn't say "massively" ...? Again, size in that respect isn't one of my main concerns tbh. It's more a case of I don't want to. Buy one device then regret it and wish I'd bought the other option lol :tearsofjoy:

Thanks

Ian

Between the two options, I would pick the Note 8, because it would also handle phone duties so you would only need a single device (and everything that comes with that i.e. single charger, single cable, etc.), and that device is pocketable. You don't want to be taking pictures with an iPad, for your sake and those around you. 😉

Less faffing about, I get that. So is there anything the iPad can do that the note 8 can't, do you know?

Thanks again

Ian
