I think I read something about Lollipop that all programs, including carrier-installed apps, have to go through the Play Store, meaning that the ones you don't want can be uninstalled. I don't remember the specifics, but that'd be awesome.
 
So I am having to RMA my wife's Note 4. It just dropped too many calls, and a new sim didn't help. No local store has it in stock, so we have to send it to Samsung. They did offer two way shipping and an expectation of a week turn around.

The guy at the At&t store says out of the hundreds he sold this was the second with that complaint. Just bad luck I guess.

That would be fantastic, I shouldn't have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get rid of useless bloatware that the provider decided to add to the phone. PC's come with all that kind of bloatware too, but at least there you can just uninstall it and be done with it.

I hadn't heard about that. That'll be pretty sweet if it pans out that way.
 
Quick question about this phone. Can you speak to it while the screen is locked? Ok google?

Because I was under the impression that only the Moto X and other Moto devices can do that.

Holy crap, I just realized that Lollipop is going to bring this feature to nearly every (not old) phone! That essentially removes the feature from my must-haves list, making my next phone decision easier! The note 4 may be in the lead at this point. But can I handle the size? Stay tuned, folks.

I've played with one at Best Buy and I was pretty close to getting one at ATT when I visited. I was worried about the size too, but after using it a bit I think having that screen size would be nice. I actually find the stylus to be really slick too, and would actually come in handy often during work.

I go back and forth on it because it's pretty expensive, and I don't really NEED a new phone yet.

It can do it, but instead of OK Google you say "Hi Galaxy." I had to calibrate it to work for my wife.

You can use "Ok Google" on the Note 4 when the screen is off through the Google Now settings but I believe some actions are limited if your screen is locked and you have security on (fingerprint, PIN, etc).

I have played with the Note 4 at a store a bit today and I now have more favorable opinion on it than my last encounter with it. TouchWiz has a come a long way and is cleaner than ever. Really I wouldn't mind TouchWiz as long as I can root the phone, uninstall bloats, and have working firewall and adblock. I think I can deal with the occasional jankiness - it seems like a trade-off for faster scrolling anyway. (on iOS I get very impatient because scrolling is like 5 lines per swipe)

One-handed mode was surprisingly easy to enable and disable, which may come in handy. I even liked black-and-white power saving mode, too. Kinda neat.
 
Ooomg it's killing me that the Verizon Note Edge still hasn't passed through the FCC with the release date slated for tomorrow. The wait continues 🙁

Hopefully that holds true in the case of the Note 4 as well. Lack of root is holding me back from making the upgrade at this point. I see Sam's is selling the Note 3 for $0.96 on black Friday which has me intrigued as well.

Rooting the TMobile version was easy and there is already a decent range of ROMs. You do trip Knox however.

I'm running a custom ROM on my TMobile Note 4 with service on AT&T.

My problem is I require a Verizon version which always seems to run well behind everything else for custom support. I really, really wish I lived in an area with decent ATT or TMobile coverage.

The Note 4 Verizon Developer Edition has an unlocked bootloader and has been rooted via chainfire's autoroot (same as the T-mo and international versions).

You can't get it on contract unfortunately, but it is an option.

<edit>The bootloader is actually "locked" but can be unlocked via a fastboot command like Nexus devices

Ok - this is super cool. The ROM I'm running on my TMo Note 4 added a new feature to have "surround sound" by having sound play out of the earpiece and the regular speaker. Works surprisingly well. Not as good of course as true stereo speakers, but a significant improvement over just the back speaker. The ROM developer gives credit to sshafranko (maybe the guy who does all those kernels as well).

Do you avoid carrier bloats if you buy the phone from non-carrier stores (e.g. BestBuy, Amazon, Walmart, etc.)? The number of bloats added by AT&T on this phone is downright scary.
