That is odd. id.me did require a Drivers License upload, but Login.gov did not. At least for me....
I wouldn't mind that. but id.me now requires a live video chat. It's ridiculous. But then it gets much worse:
After being unable to login for days, and getting a round of support emails telling me how to fix the issue, all of them requiring that I login, even though that was the very issue I had...I gave up and did a live video chat.
For some reason, even though my laptops mic works fine, they can never hear me. I finally get "Tam" to call my landline during the chat. He informs me that the issue is that two accounts can NOT share the same phone number. I tell him that's ridiculous, that we only have one phone. His suggestion? Install another line, or buy a cell phone. It was very hard not to tell him to fuck off. My wife has a cell, but she hates it when I give out the number.
So then he decides I should delete the phone number from my account, because I don't have the authority to delete it from my wife's account, and she's not home. Then she will be able to login, and change/remove the number on her account. Then I can do another chat to fix mine...so I reluctantly agree, explaining that I'm sure that won't work, we still have only one phone. He keeps telling me through the whole call that times have changed, and I'm just confused/don't understand. Yeah, we all get full blown dementia in our 50's these days.
I then tried to login to my wife's account, and it tells me there is no account with that email. The dumbass deleted her account entirely. The phone number is still associated with my account, and it still won't call me with a verification code.
So chat number 2 starts, and the mic doesn't work again. I remember them having the same issue last year. This agent fucks around for 10 minutes, and tells me my phone is ringing through chat (it's not). She hangs up without a word.
And on chat number 3 I get an intelligent person, finally. She calls me, and informs me that "Tam" is new, and still in training. You can have as many accounts as you want with same phone number, just need a different email address. She sees the ticket and tells me he was suppose to remove the phone number from my account, but didn't. Good thing, she tells me they can only call the number associated with my account, and without one I would never get my account back. She also confirms that the other account is gone, and can't be recovered. Of course I had no authority to remove her account (thanks Tam). My wife will be so happy. She actually uses it for the IRS, and that's all they take.
She has no idea why the system won't call my number. She askes if I have a cell, thinking text may be better than voice. So I gave her my wife's cell number for my account. When she gets home, I'll try that. If it doesn't work, I'll video chat again, and close my id.me account.
TL;DR
If I had known all this was going to go down, I would have just used login.gov in the first place. BTW, this all took about 2.5 hours...I ain't happy.
