I never liked kids when I was younger. My friends were always a year or two older.

I generally chose older friends as well. I just have empathetic feelings when I deal with children. It makes me think of myself and the joys and difficulties of being a child. It is easy for me to remember how I felt and think about how frustrating certain aspects of life were.

That's the nice part of parenting a boy though. You only have to worry about ONE penis. If you are parenting girls you have to worry about ALL the penises! :p

exactly. i keep telling my daughter soon im going to lock her up in the basement. only time she gets out is to go to school...then i tell her btw im enrolling you in a all girls school.

she just rolls her eyes and says "daddd"

I wish everyone would have kids. I mean, the people who shouldn't have kids have them anyway, so the ones that don't now could at least balance them out with kids of decent upbringing.

I'm 100% positive adult Ns1 would hate child Ns1.

I would probably smack myself, and in true movie fashion, when my younger self asked, "Why!?" I'd smack myself again, and say "for being a pussy... and then acting like one."

Hmm I think I could word that a bit better! :p

You'd think evolution would eliminate the "Don't want kids" mentality from our minds.

That said. With a selfish society, kids are just "in the way." Doesn't suprise me. When everybody turns selfish, we will have a ruined society. Nobody cares though.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being selfish. I can live my life however I see fit. If you deem that 'selfish' because I live for my own enjoyment... well it's not your life is it?

For my wife and I it wasn't because "society expects us to", it's that we want to experience raising a child and teaching them things and just generally providing for them. Also it will be nice when we are old and we have still have close family around.

I thought that was a natural feeling most people have, but it seems more and more people are losing this instinct. I don't think it's a bad thing though, maybe over time it will help with overpopulation.

It's been great so far, check with me when the kid is a teenager though, I might have a completely different outlook on it :p.

hate to call you out specifically but this is the standard selfish reasons, like it's a science experiment and so you can have someone to be there when you're old

don't count on it

I had an aunt that used to introduce the wife and I and then end it with "they don't have kids because they want nice things".

One time I just responded, this is my aunt, she has 3 kids, is unemployed an alocoholic, and always asking me for money."

She never said it again.

You can call it selfish if you want, but there things and reasons for having kids that are selfish. I for one can't imagine why anyone would actually want to bring a child into the craptastic future that we are headed for.

I just wished I could get a tax deductions equivalent to the child deductions. Its one's choice to have a kid, whether they can afford the child or not. If we are going to subsidize people's wants in this manner then subsidize my want, too.

There is a slight difference between subsidizing the care and training of future citizens and subsidizing your iphone5...

Unfortunatly the ones that shouldn't have kids are usually the ones with 5 by the time they are 25.

In many parts of the world having a basketball team of kids is not only normal, and also unethical when the parents jolly well know they no means to provide them with a decent upbringing.

That is so full of win.

The main reason I never wanted kids is i believe that the USA and the world in general is on a fastrack course to over population. Too many people chasing too few resources will cause increasing global conflicts and in the end the quality of life will be nothing I would wish on my decendants. I have held this view since the late 60's.

Eh from an economic view both are very similar. The difference is the numbers involved. An iPhone 5 is $600 or whatever that goes into the economy. Expenses for a kid have the same effect of money going into the economy, it's just a larger amount is all.

Indeed.

But I'm sure we can keep up this recent growth rate indefinitely. :D

It's a hell of a fine place to live, too. A very substantial amount of the world's population lives in poverty.

I would think that's common sense. Not everyone wants (or SHOULD) have kids.

This. Considering the project population levels and the impact that could have on the planet's resources more people should take a hard long look at their desire to have children as well.

Interesting thread. I didn't know that my age group (25 - 35) was so open and vocal about not wanting to have children.

Other than thinking, "I'd be great at parenting," I've never really had a strong urge one way or another on the issue. To me that means that I should opt out and enjoy travel, food and my own hobbies rather than take the plunge and hope that I end up liking being a parent.

Whether this helps or hurts the planet overall is of very little concern to me.

I enjoy these threads, I like seeing the self imposed extinction going on in various groups of our culture. Good thing all us brown people aren't acting like morons in this regard, we're breeding you people out!

I really think extinction is a very long ways off, if ever. Pretty sure the planet will be destroyed before that ever happens. The big thing is the constant blending of races that will eventually lead to the extinction of certain races, but not because they aren't having kids. There are PLENTY of people having kids.

We are one meteor away, one nearby star going supernova and us in the line of sight, etc.. We are nothing but mortals floating on a giant rock which we have no control over.

exactly. odds of what you mentioned happening is far greater then we as a species going extinct because of not wanting kids.

I don't want kids myself and never have wanted them really, pretty much for all the reasons stated in this thread. Kids are loud, obnoxious, expensive as hell and consume your life. I can't stand being around kids and especially babies and I'm certain I would hate myself as a child. Also never cared one bit for nonsense like lineage or what have you, I don't give a rats ass if anyone remembers me when I'm gone if I leave anything of worth behind (be in monetary or otherwise).
Some would call that selfish but I don't care and I don't go around telling others how to live their lives.
