Not too familiar with the e6420s, question

I am looking into an E6420. Its a L651B602..

Are these known as good overclockers? I want something that I know should OC well and that can put my watercooling to the test (lol)

Yes they are, with a good motherboard & RAM, and your water-cooling you should be able to get to 3.6GHZ easily. If you get as lucky as you did with your Pentium D you might get 4.0GHZ.

OK cool. I have the following:

Gigabyte N680SLI-DQ6 mobo
2gb (2x1gb) DDR2 1000 Crucial Ballistix

I can't recommend 680i motherboards anymore unless you want to go SLI, which I also don't recommend unless you have money to burn. A P35 motherboard is the way to go right now. Asus P5K boards and the Abit IP35 boards are top performers right now. I can vouch for the fact that the P5K Deluxe is a great overclocker.

This Gigabyte seems to be doing loads better than the eVGA one.

Granted, I may go sli so I am probably going to keep this. But if the right offer came around on a trade for a better oc board :p

So far I've got my 6420 at 3.4ghz on air (Retail Intel fan 1.4v) waiting to push it higher. I stopped pushing it not because of temp or voltage issues but because I'll waiting to install my aftermarket heatsink before I get treal serious.
