not sure what's wrong, but can't run defrag or spybot

When I try running spybot, it gets halfway done and then stops. It says, "Error during check!: Xuron55 (Datei C:\WINDOWS\win.ini kann nicht geöffnet werden. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process) ()." It does this even if I run it in safe mode.

I tried defragging. After about 10 minutes it stopped and said some files can't be defragged.

I thought maybe I had a virus, so I ran McAfee Virusscan. I ran it on everything. It says no infected files.

I then tried Adaware, thinking it might find something that spybot didn't. Adaware ran fine and found two problems, but did not fix this big problem I'm having.

My spybot, adaware, and virusscan are all updated. Does anybody have any ideas what the problem is and how I can fix it? Is there something else I can run? I have Windows XP Pro if that helps. Thanks in advance.

1) is McAfee completely updated? You should have the 4400 engine (might be represented as 4.4.00) and the 4517 DATs to be up-to-date.

2) run the McAfee scan in Safe Mode rather than regular Windows, if you didn't already.

3) install and update Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta (download link) and run the full scan with that as well.

4) if you suspect a virus infection and can't kill it or find it, there's always the sure solution: nuke your existing Windows installation completely and start over, following "best practices" to ensure that you start secure and stay secure. Here is my contribution to that: start here. Unwelcome ideas to some people, but whatever.

well, I finally figured out the spyware part of the problem. I had Downoad Accelerator Plus on my computer, which may have been causing problems, so I removed it. They say it doesn't have spyware, but I don't believe that's true. I also uninstalled and then reinstalled Spybot. It works fine now. Thanks for all the help.

I'm still having a slight defrag problem, though. I'll probably start a new topic for that, since I'm past the spyware problem.
