Not sure what happened here - loose hard drive?

So, I just received my new Digital Storm PC today - opened her up and discovered something strange...

It looks like the hard drive is not properly seated - on one end, the metal pegs are resting inside the hard drive's slots, but on the other side, it looks like it's angled upward and that end is actually resting on top of the pegs on that side.

My questions:

1. Did this simply just come loose during shipping or is it possible they just didn't install it right?

2. Should I send it back, keep it as is, or attempt to fix it myself?

3. Is it normal that it seems almost impossible trying to get the other side seated into the pegs?

Is it supposed to boot?
I'd see if it boots and recognizes the hard drive right away.
It looks like the hard-drive locking system failed..
It may have damaged it..listen for clicking.

Yeah it should - it's "ready to go"

I was more concerned about damage than anything else, but I suppose its worth just booting her up and seeing if it works as expected?

That's what it looks like - whatever was supposed to "lock" in the left side is obviously not.

Should I boot it up and see what happens?

Unhook it, pull it out, resecure it in it's cradle, reinstall. Boot 'er up.

I think that's what I'm unsure of - it seems almost impossible to "resecure" it in its cradle.

I haven't unhooked it yet, but from the little fiddling I did with it, I'm not even sure it will even budge at all.

It looks like its wedgied in there, just carefully pry the cage to where you can pull it out. I would remove everything else in the cage, or what you can.

The little black trays with grips on them pull out. You should be able to pull it and the drive out, pop it back into the tray, and then slide the tray back in.

someone inexperienced wedged it in there and didnt use the cradles...

lol... try to pull the cradles out first.... the top one and the lower one.. then tilt the drive lose and pull it out... reattach locks on cradle to drive and slide it back in after u reconnected it.

Make note of the SATA connector notchs.. make sure u allign the correct side to the notch.

I think it's more likely that the box got turned upside down during shipping and took a hard jolt.

i sort of thought this too until i looked deeply at the cradles.

those are the same kind my bitfinex uses, and once secured inside that holder the drive falling out like that is almost impossible.

The only way it could happen is if the drive was improperly installed into cradle.. or someone just shoved the drive in... im guessing more on the second due to the placement of the drive left corner not being anywhere near any of the metal tack holders.

it was like someone literally tried to slide the drive inside with the cradles still intact.

Agree. My Coolermaster uses this type of mount as well. The pegs can be a pain to fit in teh screw holes, but there's no way the drive just fell out.

To the OP:

Pull the drive out, along with one of the brackets. Place the bracket beneath the drive. Line the pegs up with the screw holes and insert first one side and then (the tricky part), stretch the bracket until you can fit the pegs in the screw holes on the opposite side.

It may take some force getting the pegs to slide into the screw holes, but once you get the drive mounted you should be able to slide the drive and bracket back into the case.
