Not sure what device I need

I just moved into a university residence. Setting up a wireless connection is not allowed - instead we have one ethernet port on the wall. As a result, we can only have one computer connected to the internet at a time via this wired connection. The problem is, I live with my partner and we both need internet access for our separate computers. We both need to be online at the same time. What is the easiest and most simple way to accomplish this? I don't know much about hubs, routers, and switches. I imagine there should be some sort of basic splitting device I could plug into wall which would allow 2 computers to use the ethernet port. Does something simple like this exist? If so, how much would this cost and where could I buy one? I really appreciate your help.

It's called a router. Possibly a switch would work too, if they are willing to hand out multiple IPs.

Also contact your school to verify they won't disconnect your connection for using a router. Some will auto disconnect you and do it 2-3 times will ban you from the campus network.

If you are sharing a room, the school should provide a way to allow both of you on. Normally there are 2 ports some where in the room.

Remember it is their network and they are giving you the privilege of using it.

It's called a router.

This. You should be able to find a good, reliable router for well under $40 that would probably include four wired ports of 100 GB/s or even 1TB.s ethernet and secure wireless connection, too. If that's not allowed, you don't have to use it. You may even find one that allows independent printer sharing so you and your room mate won't have to fight over connecting to your printer.

Here's a link to a long list of models from Newegg.

It depends, are they allocating you only ONE ip address for the room, if that's the case you'll need a router. If you plug in a switch and you both can get online, then no problem. Switches are way better than hubs and you can get a 5 port gigabit switch for under $30 so if you have friends over, a playstation, or whatever. . .

You were probably given this information already and you probably put your signature on a piece of paper agreeing to follow the network usage policy. A quick call to the IT help desk should get you the answer you're looking for.
