benq is not bad by any means, just not the best... i have two benq 32x burners and they are picky about media
created coasters with ty tdk 16x 650mb @ 8x, but burn 16x hi-val 650mb @ 32x with no problems
thing is, the ty tdk originally burnt @ 32x, then one day, just kept making coasters...
lg 8320b/32x cdrw is burning both @ 32x.

O.K. took back the I/O Magic. The OM I went to had the Verbatum and Cenydyne in stock. Asked the clerk about the substitution. They said can't do it.

If by chance I get a different clerk to do it...which is better? The Verbatum or the Cendyne? BTW the Cendyne had model # LTR-48125W on the outside of the box.

Store near PV Mall in north Phoenix, AZ, substituted the Pacific Digital (LiteOn); but priced it at $39.99 and gave me a fax/copied rebate form. Difficult to read; but still a$19.99 LiteOn 48x AR!

Bought one of the IOmagic drives in Austin the day after Xmas. It's an Optorite (note spelling) model CW4802 and looks nothing like the picture on the box (Benq?). No stuck-on labels on the box as with the Cendyne drives to help you identify the manufacturer. Hard to find anything on Accesstek website, but there's some specs and firmware here:

Just bought one at OM in Plesanton, CA.

They were out of I/O Magic but when I asked for possible subsitutions, showed me the HQ authorized sheet which listed 3 subs:

1) Pacific Digital 48x
2) Verbatim 48x
3) CenDyne 48X Part# CDICD00118

The first 2 were with IR for $20 at the counter but they were out of stock on them. I took the CenDyne which were adjusted from $100 down to $50 w/ a $30 mail in rebate.

I'm still at work so I don't know who made the CenDyne although the previous poster found it to be by Accestek/Optorite.

I bought it today, 1/2/03. I think your sales person was smokin crack 🙂 cuz I was in the store yesterday and the sale was still on. And obviously it's still on today. I'm not sure how longs OM sales run for but I think they are from Sunday to Sunday.

The Plesanton store still had about 6 Cendynes left at noon today after I bought mine.

Yeah, that sales person was smoking crack. The sales run Saturday to Saturday. The prices for the coming Sunday's ad are in the computer the day before so the sales signage can be put out.

Customers are offered the Cendyne first as far as I know but the PacDig is a valid sub.

At the Pleasanton OM, my rep showed me the HQ approved subsitution list w/ all 3 possible choices and we tried to figure out which were still on the shelves. It ended up that they only had Cendyne in stock but he was willing to let me have whichever of the 3 I wanted.

Of course, I was very polite and nice which always helps 😛

Which one of the above has a higher probability of being a lite-on?
How can I tell from the outside of the box?

Sorry, I wasn't watching the thread. The Cendyne's are the easiest to tell what's inside from looking at the box. You mentioned it said model # LTR-48125W That is definitely a Lite-On, the LTR signifies that. But the Cendynes will not necessarily be a Lite-On, I think AX is another possible prefix, AccessTek. I know it can be hard at OM to get the droids to grab you the right box, just tell them what you're looking for. I think I've read that Pacific Digital's are also frequently Lite-On's but still easiest to check the Cendyne box.

48125W is Lite-ON, 4816P is Benq, and CW4802 is OptoRite, searched for it on Google. Those are the model numbers for the substitutions.

I got the substitued Cendyne which turns out to be a Optorite. I really wanted a lite-on and, I heard this brand is junk.

Mine is. Outside looked just like my 24x (except for the speed sticker, of course) and the PCB on the inside is stamped LiteOn.

The only thing identifying on the inside on the PCB was LTR with a number and below it was a revision number.

Guess it's probably not then.

Yours is a LiteOn. I should have been specific. LiteOn stamps the LTR model number on the PCB. See this article. It's almost two thirds of the way down.
