Officemax has an I/O Magic 48x16x48 Internal CD-RW drive for $69.99 - $30 IR - $20 MIR at B&M. Any good? Depends on the quality of the drive. Anyone had any experience with I/O Magic drives?

I have used 2 of their CD ROM drives. They work well, but the longevity is suspect. I had the first one for less than a year before it stopped spinning. I got another (great price!) soon after (56K) and have had it for about a year, and am starting to have similar problems...it chooses when it wants to spin up. Kind of like me at work...

Also forgot to say...OM carries Cendyne drives too. They are LiteOn manufactured drives (check the part #). I picked up a 48x12x48 last week for $29.99 ($30 MIR and $10 instant). Not sure if they still doing these.

Someone on FW said that his store was out of the IOMagic drives and they substituted the Pacific Digital 48x12x48. He also said they gave him an IR on sub so he paid 19.99 plus tax out the door. Another FW member got he same deal.

Another person said his stores were offering the Verbatim and Cendyne drives as substitutes.

I got an I/O Magic 48X16X48 from OM. The part number on the box is DR-CDRW4848. Anyone know what the drive manufacturer is (Digital Research?) and if it is a decent drive?

I have been looking around and can find little info. The I/O magic site does not even list this as product let alone for firmware or drivers. Have I done a bad thing?

Cendyne drives can be almost anything. As mentioned, check part #.

A little hint for people who buy Cendyne and the drive is not Lite-ON: don't ditch it just yet. My 40x12x48 (Accesstek I think) is identical to a MSI CD-RW, and I could flash an MSI bios on it. Now reports as a MSI drive and works just great.

Scored the Pacific Digital as a sub to the I/O Magic drive, $19.9x + tax out the door, no slowwwww rebate to deal with. Same stock excuse I suppose that happened here at the local store as with the Cendyne DVD-R/-RW drives (see related thread about the Cendyne DVD-R deal).

The IO magic is likely a Benq. See if you can sub the pacific digital if it is a liteon.

lately iomagic has been putting a photo of the actual drive on the outside of the box. probably a benq, as someone already posted. if it has little horiz vents on the lower part of the bezel, it's 99% certain it's a benq

If the store in anyone else's area is like the store I near me, then they're already out of the I/O Magic drives.

The Cendynes we have in are a valid corporate authorized substitute and will be pricematched down to $49.99 and have a $30 MIR of their own, but the ones my store has in stock are not Lite-Ons anymore. We had Lite-Ons once-upon-a-time but now the Model# on back says CW4808 IIRC.

You can get the Hi-val [IIRC] 48/16/48 for $19.99. That's the price out the door as it will have to be pricematched down and there are no MIRs.

The same goes for the Pacific Digital 48/16/48 drive.

Like I said though, some stores are out of the Lite-Ons.

In this case, I'd upgrade it to a conditional SMOKIN' deal ;)

RE:"if it has little horiz vents on the lower part of the bezel, it's 99% certain it's a benq"

True...or three indented concave ridges side to side on the top of case...it's a BenQ.

Yes, my bezel has horizontal vents, must be benq. Outside box says I/O Magic, tech support insert inside says Hi Val. Last week my OM trip got me an Aopen in a Cendyne box. I keep tryin' for the Lite-On & the harder I try, the sh*tt*er luck I have, LOL. Oh well, $20 drives I shouldn't complain too much. That $20 out the door, lite on business sure sounds good. Good luck to all.:)

maybe buy two of them (comparing serial numbers beforehand to ensure they are from different families). then email the rebrander with the serial number before opening the box
but i kept the benqs even after i knew better -- they make such a cool sound opening and closing
care and feeding -- they like cheap hi-val 16x -- burns them @ 32x
good luck

just to clarify,

I/OMagic doesn't make any of their own products. All they do is relable and sell under the I/OMagic brand. They usually package BenQ, BTC, LiteON, Aopen or Acer drives for their CDRW units. The DVD+RW drives are either Philips, or Richoh.

Pacific Digital and Cendyne do the exact same thing.

I just went to the OM in Mountain View and since they were out of the I/O and also the PD, they
subbed a Verbatim 48x part#VBT481248A. (with Nero and 'burn protection')

Any idea if this is also a Liteon?

Thx.

Just checked cdfreaks.com and it looks like the Verbatim IS a liteon! WhooHoo..

Note: The Verbatim's are not always Lite-On's. I bought one a while back and it was an Aopen. Not saying yours isn't, just a heads up. The biggest giveaway is the shape of the LED and eject button.

No go in Tigard, OR. I asked the mgr. and he said they were out of the I/O Magics and they were also out of whatever they were subbing as well. :(

I just got one of the I/O Magic 48x16x48 drives from OM but haven't opened it yet. How can I tell who makes it before I open the box? Are these drives really that bad? I have an LG 16x10x32 that works great so I guess I can hold off until the Sony DVD+RWs drop in price.

Alternety:

I got the exact same model (DR-CDRW4848) IO Magic (48x16x48) for $20 after rebates at Circuit City the day after Thanksgiving. It is manufactured by an obscure company called Optorite. I can actually see it identified as an Optorite during bootup at the BIOS screen. It is supposed to support up to 90 minute CD's. For me it's been running fine, for over about a month. I have burned over 30 CDs in it, no coasters yet. When I was initially buying it, it was like, what the heck, provided I get the rebates, even if it doesn't last long, I'm not out that much money.

o.k. thanks unclebud. I did see the previous comments...but I'm still unclear on what is so bad about benq?

My local OfficeMax was also out of the I/O Magic drives. They subbed a CenDyne 48x12x48 (overridden at checkout to $49.99 with $30 MIR). For that price I wasn't going to complain. To my suprise there was actually a 48x16x48 in the box!

Here's the info:

CenDyne Part# CDICD00118
Drice Model: CW 4802
Serial Number: AGE150212C00xxx

From a little research it appears to be a Accestek/Optorite.
