The smart feature is enabled in the bios, not in the operating system. SMART is a simple hard drive monitor. If your hard drive is having some sort of trouble, it will report the error to the bios and you will get a smart error warning next time you boot up.

Check your manual/mfr. website to see if your mobo supports SMART-enabled devices. You may need a BIOS update in order to see an option to enable this feature.

Have a look at DTemp (website), this program reports HDD temperatures, but also has a section displaying SMART data for the selected drive - if it's working, then the information will be displayed.

AIDA32 - download and install; under the program's Storage section is an icon for SMART; it'll detail everything that the hard drive(s) are reporting.
If you have Norton Systemworks, its System Doctor component has a SMART monitor that'll always be running.

I am currently running an A7N8X-D and I enabled S.M.A.R.T. in the bios just like they said. I am not at MY computer right now so I can't give exact directions. The manual should list it.

i have just scoured the bios again and dont see any reference to anything remotely appropriate. what bios you running? [although saying that, in the info for 1006 and 1007 i see no mention of enabling smart]; as i said i have bios 1005

please tell me where you enabled the feature from

Thanks

I found this buried on the internet about the a7n8x:

"Changes in bios revision 4x47 include:

1) Change init raid parameter to run code to fix AMI EBDA issue and remove the "imcompleted raid set" message

2) Zero Bar5 address 0x014c and 0x1cc bit0 and bit1 for 3512

3) Change BIOS display for Sync and rebuild status.

4)Change the copyright year from 2003 to 2004 and remove smart self test.

5)Change PIO data read handling and release the EPAD version of 3512 as public download and no-EPAD version as internal use."

so, there you go, it is not in the bios anymore

yeah....but i looked in sandra and found that it is enabled so i assumed enabled by default
and just 1 hour ago Maxtor finally emailed me back [about this question and UDMA6 question - over a week after i had sorted it myself c/o forums and 10 days after i emailed them in the first place! (okay, i know that is quite good in relative terms!:roll;) and they confirmed that SMART is enabled by default on the chipset.
