Not so easy Windows XP Networking Issue

Or maybe it is for someone who has solved it already...

I have 2 computers. One a laptop running XP Home. The other a Desktop Running Pro.

The problem: Transfering files between them.

I can do ANYTHING on the network but transfer files. I can open them, work on/with them, save them. I can browse the network. I can ping. I just cannot transfer a file larger than 50k from one to the other. And even a file that small takes 15-25 seconds. But I can stream a DVD/MPG from one to the other with no problems. Unless I try and copy a file - then the stream halts.

If I try the sytems will hang for a minute or two, maybe periodically doing a quick jump in progress and then suddenly I get an error message that the path is too deep. Which if you are in C:\ transfering to the root of another drive with a short file name we know is a bogus error message. (I did that just to test and make sure - you never know.)

I never have any problems with internet connectivity, network browsing or useage. I am simply at a loss.

I have checked network settings about 100 times. I do not have windows firewall turned on. I tried the pro machine both with and without simple networking. I have everything fully patched.

This is through a Linksys Wireless (b)/router/switch. But everything is hard wired in. Used to work fine - when the desktop was 2k Pro. I "upgraded" (fresh install though) to XP and now this. It even worked fine with XP on both for a while. But suddenly now it doesn't.

Ideas?

Thanks
