Not really impressed with 6800OC and Farcry..or is this just a difficult game to render?

I bought a 6800OC last week and promptly tweaked it, opened up the 4 extra rendering pipelines and 6th vertex shader, OCed it some and got nearly 11,500 in 3D mark 03'..backed it down to just a mild OC for the long term and I still get a solid 10,700.

Now the benches are over, my system is tweaked and everything is running great..I now sat down to play the game that my 6800 came with.

Ive played around with the settings and the highest res I can go with 4x AA and 8x AF is 1064x768 , quality set to medium on everything.

First off for me , one slowdown is too many...a studder and the next thing I know is I am dead.
I can play at 30fps but it cannot be dropping below that , not even for a second.

This is the only game I have a the moment, I sold my Radeon 9800 and all my games last year and am just now getting back into playing some games again.

I have heard that 1.3 patch slows things down some so maybe this is my problem, I did not really play the game much before I installed the patch.

As far as quality goes I am impressed, Farcry is a great looking game and the 6800 looks awesome when its able to handle the load.

It isn't your videocard keeping you down in Far Cry, it is the rest of your system.

P4 3ghz,800fsb/Intel I875P chipset/ 512mb PC3200 is not enough for this game?

It's enough for some people, but if you want better framerate then a faster cpu will give it to you.

gig o ram should be the norm by now for a gaming system, 256 on xp pro is a waste of time, and u can get by on 512 if u only do light gaming
ut2004 uses more than 512 when u preload all player skins.....a gig o ram is the way my friend

His processor is PALUNTY fast enough. My 2.8/533 1GB DDR400 and 6800nu plays it fine without any o/cing or softmodding @ 10x7 4x/8x Everything Very High. I would recommend more memory. Up it to 1GB and should be a lot smoother.

But, 640k should be more than enough for anything. "Bill Gates". :p

Definately more memory.

Also with a 533mhz fsb you MAY be able to run it maxed out but i highly doubt it as the memory isn't in sync, and the P4 is just absolutely starved for bandwidth.

Lastly, we all say more memory yet he hasn't said the memory config. He just said 512. I HOPE that you are running that in dual channel, if not you must have a HUGE performance hit (as it is a P4).

1. Memory

2. WHen you get enough money or get bored A64 rig.

CPU does make a rather large difference when using the 6800 series of cards. The difference between my A64 at 2.2ghz and it at 2.58ghz is 17% frame rate at 1280x1024 with my 6800nu. So a 350mhz boost in cpu speed added a significant amount of performance. Another 512MB of memory helps as well, mostly with the stuttering. I run FarCry at 1280x1024 2xAA/4xAF with very high details using my 6800nu (overclocked to 430/920 16p/6vp) and only sometimes drop into the 28-30fps range when in the large outdoor environments with multiple enemy's.

Thanks guys, more ram it is !

I'll order up 2 more Micron 256mb pc3200 modules to go in my system. All 4 modules will be identical and both sets will be in dual channel operation.

Ive been playing some more and really the game looks good with no AA and AF so I could live with it as it is..regardless though Ill get the ram and see what sort of improvements that yields.

Changing out CPUs is not going to happen as I just got this recently, Hyperthreading is enabled at this point...would dis-ableing this feature do anything for me?

I dont buy that, I am a long time tweaker and I have never seen that small of a CPU increase do anything besides increase bench scores.

358 A64 MHz != 358 P4 MHz. Even on my XP-M, 358MHz is a nice boost in CPU power.

No. Add more RAM. :p FarCry plays much smoother with a gig.

1 GB is essential for smooth game play with these newer games. Its not your 6800's fault.

If you are running at high quality, you're running at 8XAF.

Thats Doom III not Far Cry.
