I wish I could agree with that statement, but after working with EMTs for 6 months, the answer to that is that no, not that many cars do very well with side impacts. Particularly vs. heavier vehicles. You should see what a Tahoe does to an Avalon.
i'd guess the differing heights of the tahoe vs avalon would factor in too but i think for similar weight / size cars most new ones can do this.
friend of mine had an e92 m3. i.e. everyones favorite car on AT garage. he got hit like this at about 40mph with an 8 year old girl in the passenger seat. they walked away with minor injuries...
amazingly the insurance company had the m3 repaired, and he sold it for a 535i.
