Not One, but TWO M5's

Today I saw not one, but two BMW M5's, the first I have ever seen. Both were the new model, and looked gorgeous. One had a nice silver color, the other one was completely black with windows a bit dark for my taste. The silver one was on the side of the road, and as I walked up behind it, I saw the quad exhaust and wide tires, and just knew there was something different about this 5-er. Sure enough, the M5 badge was visible on the back and the side. The second M5 was driving on the same road in the opposite direction, and sounded great as the driver sped through traffic. I'm surprised that two such rare cars would be seen so close together. Maybe the drivers were having a meeting? Just thought I'd share my experience. This was in Boston on Commonwealth Ave, BTW.

I've seen a cherry Red and a Black one in Downtown Calgary.

The Red was a 2000 I think...the Black was a late 90s.

The aren't all that rare, but they're certainly not something you see everyday.

I've seen a few, but I've been much more impressed by the Vipers that I saw.

Gee, I wonder why?

😉

I agree, the current Vipers rock, but the new ones look like Honda got a hold of it.

The Viper is a beast of course, but seeing the M5 in person revealed something that wasn't conveyed in any picture I've seen. It just screamed performance while mantaining the aura of luxury. Very nice effect, imho.

i see vipers much more often than M5's. Its cuz i live so close to the DC tech. Center in Auburn HIll, Mi though. mmmmm... M5

heh, I just saw 3 of them driving down Highway 1 (PCH) in Newport Beach... two silver and one white... mmmmmmmmmm... I also saw two yellow F355 Spyders, a handful of 911 Carrera 4's, one 996 (the new twin turbo?), and some Bentley or Rolls... which is the one with the angel hood ornament? I felt so inferior driving a Dakar Yellow '99 M3 =P

edit: whoops, Bently != Bentley 😛

holy cow, is Newport Beach in LA?

Why are you saying they are rare?
Here in Silicon Valley, It seems like every other car is an M5. It's really pathetic. I almost always see one at least once a day.
Also, I have seen at least 2 Ferrari Modenas within 1 block of my home in 1 week. I was getting gas next to one at Shell, and damn does it look sweet. And the guy had a hot GF too. I guess she came with the car 🙂

I like this controlled M5 understatement, really refined. A AMG Mercedes looks more like a farmer's car, and a Ferrari, you know ....

A kid at my college owns a 2001 Mercedes S55 AMG, the only passenger car under $100K (barely) that I would take over an M5.

That car is unbelievable; rides on 19s; the only thing missing is a limo-tint.

hmm, the German automotive magazins clealry rate the M5 higher than the AMG 55 (E-class base). Acceleration and elasticity is the same

0 to 100km/h: 5.8 secs for both cars (A Porsche GT2 does the job on 4.9 seconds)
40km/h to 80km/h: 2.8 secs for both cars

But the M5 is better in cornering, and would outrun the AMG at any decent race course. Also,
the AMG 55 comes only with automatic transmission, and no serious sport car driver is taking such a car with automatic. That's more for mom and pop and the casual car lover.

I prefer the S55 because it's a bigger car; I always liked BMW's 740iL, but the S55 is somewhat sporty while still being a huge car. Big-bodied Benzes are my thing, I guess.
