I think it's a good idea for young people to take a year or two off after high school and actually see and work in the real world before they go to college. Going straight to college seems to produce whiny nancys who move back in with their parents after college.

Work is a vacation for me, at least compared to college and most of highschool. Ever since I turned 16 I've been wrokgin 30+ hours a week at a job to afford a car and insurance and stuff like that, and going to school for 30+ hours a week. Now I just work 40-50 hours a week, the rest of the time I can sit around and go to the gym, go shopping, sit on my butt watching TV and drinking beer, all the stuff I missed in school.

Yup, that was me also. I started working at 14 and have been working ever since. I worked full time all through school. No fooling around or parties for me. Working 40-50 hours a week now isn't so bad.

I took (am taking) a year off from college and am working FT just to get a break. It's definitely been a valuable experience. My advice to everyone: Stay in school as long as possible because real life isn't all that it's cracked up to be for the vast majority of people, and there's no reason to think that yours will be any different.

You don't understand the concept of the unemployment rate, you don't get counted if you aren't looking for a job. More people France work because they probably can't afford not to. Put another way, more people can afford not to work in the US (ie., married moms.)

I understand the unemployment rate perfectly. The one I cited is the percentage of the portion of the population that are in the labor pool. Also, this statistic was for men 25 to 54 so I fail to see how stay-at-home mothers affect it. Unless you're including transsexuals perhaps? How do you conclude that more people in a highly socialistic country need to work in order to survive compared to a significantly less socialistic one?

lol. that doesn't make any sense bud. in a socialist country like france, mothers are BETTER equipped to stay home longer with more money.

80-hour work weeks would make me hate life, unless it happens to be a dream job.

Any job can be a dream job with the right mind altering drugs.

works not so bad.

an 80 hour week is pretty insane, though. I think the most I've ever worked was 60 and even that drove me up a wall.

I like putting in my 8 hours (paid lunch ftw) and having plenty of time to concentrate on my "real" life. work to live, not the other way around.

Life after college is time to get your sh!t together and focus on your career. It was a rude awakening for me.

You obviously do not, you implied that the the percentage of France's population who work contradicted the unemployment data. The statistics actually mean that A) more people who want jobs can't get find them in France and B) more people choose not to work in the US. As far as why, we make more money, pay lower taxes, and have more disposable income. More parents can afford to support their kids through graduate school. Others may have saved enough to retire before the age of 54 (to name a couple.)

What the hell job requires 80 hour work weeks?

I don't plan on working more than 40. I'll get away with 30-35 if I can get by + retire by 65. I'll have my PhD by the time I'm 27 (5 years from now), so it's all up in the air.

Im working 40 hour weeks while taking classes towards ibanking..

I figure 3 more years of this while im paying for college, then 5-6 years of ibanking/analyst work at 80+ hours/week then I can break into wall street somewhere. 5-10 more years of 60+ hour work before I transfer to a real firm, then 45-50 hours till an early retirement at 50.

In high school I was the lazy kid who floated through with mediocre grades. I worked Food service for a year and a half, (promoted to manager there within 3 months) while I stalled before college.. now im a fucking workaholic.

I work 40-45 hour weeks now, am teaching myself russian for 1-2 hours a day, on top of 4 classes this semester.

Working shit jobs where you cant even afford rent even at the top of your promotion possibilities is a GREAT fucking motivator to contribute to society. I want to work hard, I want to succeed, I want to get somewhere in life.

I can vouch for this method. Im 20 at the moment, worked 16-17 at an office, 18-20 (post-highschool) at food service.

It complely changed me. Im now doing a 14/hour full workweek on top of classic, foreign language learning, and GM'ing a wow guild in ssc/tk:)-P) I fucking LOVE being busy. Im even up at 5am to take my girlfriend to her work. I go in 8-5 (7 today, making up my x-ray/mri earlier in the week for a busted knee)

You could always cheer yourself up by reading news sites like the Onion in your free few minutes a day.

Look at the bright side, you dont have to work 40 hours a week plus goto school full time. Then again on the bright side I will be able to graduate with little to no debt because of working full time (at an insurance company).

Man do I not enjoy looking forward to 40 years of this stuff either....

Hmm..I might have worked 80 hours a week in school...but with my job I'm lucky to get 40 :)
Unless you have this yearning desire to be an ibanker or accountant during tax season..I see no reason to work so many hours. Frankly, the amount of hours you work != the amount of $$ you earn.
