Yes he did....

ReplayTV will soon complete the sale of all remaining 5500 Series DVR products, completing the first phase of the transformation of the brand from a hardware manufacturer to a leading provider of advanced DVR software and services to consumers of entertainment PCs. Today?s announcement has no impact on existing ReplayTV DVR customers who will continue to be fully supported with EPG service for their ReplayTV DVR products.

Not hot to me. Still have to pay a monthly fee for the only RTV models still being sold. That alone makes it no degree of hot, imho.

So what will happen if one of my 3 5400 died? I won't be able to get it fixed?

well unless you have extended warranty, you won't be able to get it fixed. From what I remembered, if it breaks and you can't get it fixed, they won't transfer your life time subscription to the next machine.

Also, if they're moving to software, I haven't any updates or new options available on my current RPTV. To me, keeping your existing customers happy should be important too. I have a 5040, but if there are updates available to later models then that's good for them.

All I've heard is TiVo upgrading software to give more features to their users, why can't RPTV?

This is a sad day that's been coming for many of years.

I love my Replay and TiVo and sad to see the market loosing one of the Big Names.

Very happy user of a Replay 5504 unit w/ free lifetime subscription.. Too bad they're quitting (I like my Replay better than my gf's Tivo), but as long as they keep my unit fully functional, then I'll be happy.

Boo... I've got two ReplayTV's. Enjoyed their networking capability back when they had a lot more functionality than Tivo's. I haven't kept up with the Tivo brand, not sure which one is ahead in functionality now.

I suppose that once they start to go I'll finally look into an HTPC or two. I've seen the term MythTV thrown around in regards to HTPCs, is it as good as a Replay?

I love our ReplayTV - I'm not really quite sure how we ever watched TV without it. And, we have one of the latest models to feature Commercial Advance. I like my several-year old ReplayTV better than my parents brand new DirecTivo unit! This really is sad.

Is the extended warranty worth anything is they can't fix it and therefore can't transfer your lifetime sub?

btw, the 5040 are still going for over $100 on fleabay!

If something goes wrong with your ReplayTV, it is probably the hard disk. That can really be good news if you have yet to upgrade it. I swapped my 20 Gig for a 120 Gig hard drive. That moved me from 20 hours to 120 hours. Just Google for a list of people who will sell a new drive already loaded with ReplayTV for cheap. Some can even transfer shows off your old drive.

As for monthly service fees, I still have the original ReplayTV. Back then, if you bought it, you had free service for life. Long live ReplayTV !!

Even if ReplayTV disappears altogether, the opensource community's got you covered. There are software out there that can feed custom guide information to your ReplayTV. It emulates the ReplayTV server and your ReplayTV doesn't know the difference. This of course only works after you've activated your ReplayTV.

I know that it's been hacked, but I thought the people that did it aren't giving it out since they don't want to pinch on ReplayTV. Maybe they will if replay fully goes under.

This is old news from last month and is not a hot deal, so why was it posted here?

You can get your lifetime sub transferred to another machine if yours dies, as long as you're not trying to move from an older series (2/3/4 to the latest 5xxx). Even then, some folks have had success with a transfer. They will continue to fix current hardware under warranty but are exiting the hardware biz, going software only. The TV channel guide service for the existing RTV's will continue and there's been no reason for anyone to release a workaround hack until they actually pull the plug.

If you want more info, cruise over to avsforum.com and check out the ReplayTV thread, the experts are all there. Don't listen to a lot of uninformed info and guesses in this thread.

Channel Guide info comes from Tribune Services (a different company, and they supply guide data to a number of devices), so you don't really need the Replay company (Denon & Marantz) in any case, except with respect to paying Tribute enough to keep the data flowing...

Ack, sorry to hear this. I love my 5040 (upgraded to a 5120) and Commercial Advance is the dog's bollocks. I guess if I want something comparable in the future I'll have to build a MC box for like 5X what my ReplayTV cost...

Can you guys provide a few URLs of working products or how-to guides?
