Please spare me the replies of this being off topic. I think that having your data stolen is a pretty bad deal. Yet another screw up

Evidently there is a huge flaw in MS Word.....in every version that allows people to embed a code and steal your data.

"Microsoft's flagship word processor has for years had a security flaw that could allow a criminal to steal computer files by "bugging" a document with a hidden code. "

But here's the kicker....Microsoft won't even fix anything if it's before Office 2000.

"The company said it will definitely repair the problem only for owners of the most recent versions of the software. That decision -- still left largely up in the air by Microsoft engineers -- may leave millions of users of Word 97 without a fix. All versions of Word are susceptible to the flaw, but the problem is most severe in Word 97."

I have had Office 2000 installed for some time now, and I goto the Windows Update site almost weekly (you have to with all of the MS bugs) and I still have yet to see a fix. This is also a different topic then the one that was posted before. The other one concerned a problem in IE.

Good ole Microsoft at it again.

Once more I please ask you to refrain from "this is not a hot deal" replies as I consider getting my data stolen a very cold deal.

Hot Deals (and Microsloth is likely shaking in their boots just a little...): OpenOffice

StarOffice

Corel WordPerfect (which Dell is now packaging with their computers.

Some major corporations (including Verizon) are going to StarOffice and other non-MS products.

Eventually, will Microsloth smarten up?? Nawwww...

being such saints about updating a certain patch...especially when they are pretty oblivious themselves...

IN case u dunno, you do not go to WIndowsUpdate to scan for MS Office updates and patches.

you go here

Main page is here

As you stated, this is a cold deal. If you can suggest a way to fix the flaw, then you could make it into a hot deal.

Kids, don't even start the whole argument on Open Office and Star Office against Microsoft Office. Don't compare a bike to a sports car :) And write all your personal documents in Notepad :)

Wow, I never know MS office is only a bike, I thought it's at least a sedan. Well, but with all the holes, it might be more like a dirt bike.

u r just scaring people its not so easy

the person has to send an attached doc and you have to send the same doc baCK

AND THE hacker needs to know the exact filename and the location.

so don't send back the same word doc to anyone who sent it to u in the first place.

You admit it's a cold deal so why did you post it in hot deals? You ask people to refrain from "this is not a hot deal" you should in turn refrain from serving your own agenda in hot deals. Bash Microsoft & biitch somewhere else. Maybe you can develop a site called cold deals.

Once again I see that common sense is absent in the hot deals forum. Many people post cold deals, there has been a thread about Cyberwings running for I dont know how long, and people also continue to make posts about who NOT to buy from so others dont get ripped off. I am not "serving my own agenda"........well then again maybe I am because one of the things I like to do is NOT leave my computer open to data theft/attacks. And there was a post stickied up for over a week about a security flaw in IE that allowed credit card numbers to be stolen. Thats not a "hot deal" either. And there is a link to MS office updates on the windows update site. And I thank all the people who proved they cannot read by replying that this was in the wrong forum. If you hate it so much, why dont you just NOT reply and let the thread die? Once again. I POSTED HERE BECAUSE I THINK THAT GETTING DATA STOLEN IS A COLD DEAL. To all of you crappers and flamers I am sorry that I took 30 seconds of your time to let you know about a bug in MS software. God forbid anyone ever post anything that you disagree with. No wonder people say this forum is going downhill.......................

Don't take it so personal, the people at the hotdeals don't want to wast the bandwidth in a "Hot deal" forum when it whould go better in the software/ applications forum.

You are kinda of a newbie to be so aggressive.

Ease up people. It's not a hot deal, sure. It doesn't take you people posting here to make that obvious to everyone else. Let the mods do their jobs and make that decision. This *is* a very significant issue in two areas. One, that it's a major bug/security hole and the more people who are aware of it the better. Two, MS is pretty much stating that they could care less about their old customer base and they'll gladly help Office 97 users once they upgrade to Office XP or even 2000.

BTW, don't downgrade a security hole just because of the way it might impact you and your nearby friends. Many companies setup standard shares, directories, filenames, etc. that would make stealing sensitive data very easy with this. This is a *very* big issue. For some of you here though who really is going to know what pic-69.jpg really is and why would they want it? ;)

Well I am glad I helped a few people out. That was my intention in the first place. I got the idea to post this information because there was that Sticky up of the IE credit card flaw for a couple of weeks. Hopefully the fix wil be out soon........

This is a warning, just like all the credit card frauds and paypal scams, why don't you people go complain about all those threads too? If you don't like it, don't read it (the title does say "Not Hot"). <sarcasm> You guys DO know that if you don't reply, the thread will drop to the bottom right?

they are not helping office 97 users because they have officially ceased support on older software. this happens all the time at many companies. you dont see new driver updates for 5 year old video cards do you?

they stopped support on all win95, office 97, and nt4 based stuff, and most of that stuff is ancient. sure people still use it, just as people still use 5 year old video cards, but do you really expect lifetime support?

i also dont get why people bash microsoft so much. sure there is a bug, but its for a feature that the other office suites dont even have. can you even embed code in the free suites? no. now , microsoft tried to give us new features, i applaud them, at least they tried. if you want a feature less office suite by microsoft compatible with DOC and XLS extensions spend $40 and buy ms works 2002. damn.

You do not go to Windows Update to update any version of Office. You need to go to the Office update site.

Also, get this: We really don't have a choice or say in this. Microsoft truly dominates the market of productivity suites. If you're unhappy with Word, use a simple tesxt editor. We'd all like to have a ton of features and expect it to happen without glitches. Just like with Windows, it's not possible. Features, and most of all new features, are the selling point of the Windows OSs.

I was wondering how this was going to be related to a HOT/COLD DEAL and I didn't find out.

Keeping the thread alive for you, Gobadgers :)
