Well, unfortunately, I have a few sites hosted with them. :(

I'll give them until Monday to see if the sites are up before I proceed with any further actions. :( Hopefully, Shawn isn't lying.

Let's all give them the benefit of the doubt. ;)

If we had a "you must be at least THIS tall intellectually" filter on this thread, it'd have a dozen messages in it, tops.

CW is in crisis, but it's not a fraud. It had some tech issues for weeks with LS that may have led them to suspend payment, that in turn led LS to pull the plug, demand a canceallation fee, and make it difficult for CW to get to its servers physically or logically, so only now are they getting set up in their new location. Shawn is a bit impulsive in his statements sometimes (too often, IMHO), but he said they are confident they'll be up and running by the end of the weekend--so, Monday, say, and hopefully earlier. That's been the message for the last several days.

So unless there is big news in the meantime, wouldn't we be doing ourselves, Hot Deals, and the world a favor by focussing on real life until then?

Wolfgang: Where are you getting this information about "LS demanded a cancellation fee"? What's your source on that?

The dominant theory here is that CW didn't pay bills it already owed. How do you know that isn't true?

"The dominant theory here"? The phrase boggles the mind.

This thread is about as knowledgable and reliable a guide to Cyberwings as Oliver Stone--no, a drunk Oliver Stone--is to political history. (You know, that CIA guy who wanted to blow the whistle, you know, he was restationed to Antarctica--how do you know that isn't true??)

Annual contracts (especially ones with low rates) commonly have cancellation fees; that's where that comes from.

So to sum up for those who want to get back to the CB and the TV, the best evidence available now indicates this timeline (this is plausible but still speculative AFTER the first point):

recent recurring debilitating CW pipeline problems (with disagreement over fault)
led to suspended payments,
led to suspended service (little and then no pipeline, no access to servers) & demands for payment,
led to CW moving as soon as it reacquired physical or logical access to the servers
which move should be complete by Monday, according to CW itself.

Shawn has finally disclosed the "Premier Cyberwings Data Center in Virginia" which is actually rack space that has an access point for Cogent. Cogent used to be PSInet which was a decent company that went backrupt during the dot bomb implosion. So Cogent bought the company for pennies on the dollar and can offer cheaper rates for bandwidth.

Anyways he apparently purchased their cheapest plan: The 100 Mbps of non-oversubscribed Internet access for a flat $1,000 a month. (lol 'non-oversubscribed' is comical to anyone in the business of bandwidth :)

What Shawn lacks in brains he makes up for in extravagant loquacious misleading statements (not outright lies in this last one but similar to auto companies and other corporations that stretch the truth to the point of deception). His background is certainly in hype and not hosting or networking. Though with his background in purchasing he did find a bargain. he seems to have a carrier in place and the price seems cheap enough that he can make a go of it at those rates. Lightships fee's were probably 5x possibly even 10x times that amount and that is why he couldnt afford to pay the bill. [BTW LS was not holding his servers 'hostage' as they have no legal claim to 'hold' his assets]
One thing he is NOT mentioning is that Cogent is NOT going to do anything to monitor HIS specific server beyond what Cogent does for its entire network, so your leaving your network and data in the reliable hands of a noob. Even if this guy had a simple cable connection on a home pc he could have transferred/returned the data to your websites.

AirMail1,

According to the self-proclaimed LS employee whom so many were taking so seriously (he was the source of the "CW isn't paying its bills, so we cut them off" [paraphrase] claim that is now, uh, the "dominant theory" here), LS didn't claim ownership of the servers, but simply claimed ownership of its own cables and physical facility, and wouldn't let CW touch either until CW paid what LS thinks it's owed despite the service dispute.

It's like saying "No, your stuff is your stuff, but there's no way you're coming into my house to get it--did I mention we changed the locks so you no longer have a key?"

Apparently this has changed now, perhaps for legal reasons--if this self-proclaimed LS employee was ever credible to begin with.

For those wondering, some of the sites are still active. Both my wife's and father's websites/emails continue to work via Cyberwings. No, this doesn't make sense to me, b/c Cyberwings can't even keep their main page active. Maybe their sites are hosted on one of Cyberwings leased servers. I don't know. Anyone else have an active Cyberwings site?

And for all those thinking Cyberwings/Shawn is a fraud, then why is he giving refunds? He'd be in the Florida Keys by now and you wouldn't see any trace of him or Cyberwings (if that were the case). Just a thought.

CMU Lambdas which I got way before the Anandtech effect took place (bought it during the first deal that was announced on Techbargains) is still up and pulling strong, and I've NEVER had any problems with it.

However, CMU Life which is one of the sites I got with the 5+1 deal, I think it was the third or fourth round of this deal, has had problems. But whatever, I knew coming in that this stuff was a hit and miss, I'm just glad at least one of them worked out...

Wish I backedup the database from CMU Life before the move though.

CW's servers in Maine are down (more correctly, the pipeline is off); their servers in Texas are just fine, and have been this whole time (aside from a hack attack on one server).

Maine servers (at least their data) should be up and running in Virginia by Monday.

Two points:

CyberWings started out leasing space at RackShack (Texas) - those are the servers that are still up and running (scheduled to be moved, but only after everything else from Maine is up and running).

The data center that they are moving to is said to have multiple clients - so there shouldn't be the types of issues that they had with LightShip due to strength in numbers (say what you want, but there were recurrring looping problems traced to one of Lightships' routers...I can't speculate to that leading to the scenario that Wolfgang has proposed, but it does bring it into the realm of plausibility, which is enough to not start sweating the $4 I paid...). Will they be back? They should, but the truth is that none of us really know much of anything. Some us of are going to be optimistic, some are going to be pessimistic (with all sorts of varying degrees of such). In the end, we all will be waiting to see how it plays out (I don't even have a speculation on that - I'm just watching for the entertainment at this point). If this hosting deal doesn't turn out I'm sure Shawn could make a go at MLM - he's whipped the faithful up into a frenzy.

And one last note - Kwad, it's your turn again...

Thanks to the mods for allowing this thread to continue. A lot of ATer's have accounts with CW.

Whatever happens, happens with CW. I could careless about getting a refund for $5, not even worth my time. I'm going to ride out this storm...sure hope it comes back on-line soon.

I have 2 domains, that I use purely for email, hosted at Cyberwings. I have not had a service interruption -- actually I just accessed the default index page a minute ago.

It's come to the point that I'd like to see cyberwings make it, not because I have a $10 expenditure in it, but because a lot of people around here would have to eat their own words... ;)

Not EVERYONE in the world is out to rip you off.

I already got my $10 worth out of several months of service. If they come back, it will continue to be quite a Hot Deal for me.

And this is what CEO Shawn is "banking" on. The man needs to be pushed hard by all $5-$10 account holders to receive the quality service he said he would provide. If all of us $5-$10 account holders "don't care", he gets what he wants.....Us abandoning CW for more reliable services, not asking for the $5-$10 back, the space and bandwidth in our "contract plan" is not even close to being used..............HE, THEN, IS FAT AND HAPPY!

The guy in my opinion is not a crook. He's just not the brightest light bulb in the lighting fixture store when it comes to business and customer service. He's hoping that we buy into this huge amount of storage and bandwidth at a great deal and only using 1/4-1/2 of what we paid for. It's going to backfire and haunt him again in the near future if he ever gets this new DC off the ground.

This thread is a trip. I can't believe people are people are getting so upset about this. Just relax for a few days and see what happens. There is no need to get fired up over a few dollars. You probably have that much money lost in your couch right now.

people people, you have had your laugh at other peoples expense. now everybody (or at least i think everybody) on AT has said their point of view, with a majority of people having negative views. i consider these people haters. why do you make people feel worse than they already feel. i got a 3.95 acount with them just for my email, and it has been down and i am getting a lot of s**t for it, but i know in the end it will be all right. it is called faith. now, when cyberwings comes out of this whole mess, i would like everybody to start to apologizing(?)

Whoppy, let him be fat and happy. You think "pushing him hard" is going to get anything done? If you're not happy and impatient, then request a refund. He has enough problems without being flooded with email complaints about how you lost stinking $5....do you think he will jump right on your account and fix it. NOT, LMAO! :D I say let him live fat, I got my $5 worth already.

If CW does come back on I'm going to be LMAO at all the cry babies. If CW doesn't come back on I'm going to be LMAO at all the cry babies. :D ....I know you love me! :)

No, it's called customer service. And CW should extend customer service 100% of the time to the guy with a $5 account all the way to the guy with a $500 account. When they come out of this mess, you're right, I expect everyone at CYBERWINGS to start apologizing.

I'm suppose to apologize to a company that has my money and could F-up a wet dream?????????

A lot of people have already gotten refunds (some have even expressed their amazement to that effect in this thread), but you're right, he's only committing to within 10 days. The move is higher priority.
