Great idea.

Davem556:

sorry to say, but thats even worst than rebate fraud. Thats a federal crime to tamper with the dates of postal mail. I doubt anyone in their right mind in the post office will be willing to do that for him.

I've done this once or twice when I forgot to mail in a rebate. Just wait the amount of time it says in the fine print (If you haven't received your rebate in x-x weeks call 800-xxx-xxxx). Just keep all your paperwork & in x-x weeks call them and tell them that you haven't received your rebate yet. They'll have you either mail or fax them the info & you'll get your rebate 2-4 weeks after that.

Rebates are a game, all you got to know is how to play.

That's called fraud

Yes, rebates are a game, but just like in any game you wouldn't expect your opponent to play your part, wouldn't you?

Care to explain that non-sensical statement? You're losing me somewhere in the double negative.

Yeah, I've had this happen before. It was for $150 when XP came out, and I was like a month late. I still sent it in anyway, without covering anything up, and it actually came. I probably would not do this again though, after hearing all the other ideas out there. I didn't think of any of those. So I wouldn't recommend this method, but maybe it does actually work...maybe they don't look at the date actually. I'm not sure.

Also, you guys are complaining about how he is "cheating" this company. Well, I'm sure they have cheated people enough that it at least evens out. I've lost about $100 in rebates so far(don't buy too much stuff), including one from July that I sent in my info 3 times, but they said that it was purchased in the wrong time period, even though it was in the right time period. I circled the date each time I resubmitted, and still nothing. Then, when i resubmitted the last time(in March), they said they couldn't fill it cause they have stopped the promotion or whatever. I emailed them back, kinda just going off on how unfair it was, and they didn't write anything back.

So I think, if they can screw you over, then you should be able to do it right back to them.

Davem556,
I doubt I've heard a sillier advice. You'd expect that a USPS employee will help you tamper with mail for no gain for him/her? I had a good laugh on that one.

I can't believe this thread hasn't been locked yet!? After all, this is a Hot Deals forum. Not a "Am I Screwed?" forum.

The mods must be on holiday too :)

thanks for all the feedback, guys! if nothing else, i've had fun reading all the comments. one thing is for sure - rebates are a hot button for a lot of people. (no surprise there, i guess). think i'll probably just sit on it then call in a month. seems like the safest way to go.

Earlier this year I sent in a CC rebate a couple days after the 30 day deadline & got it ok. CompUSA I would expect would reject it. Is it to be mailed to a PO box? If so, they may close the PO box.

I'd return the item and eat the restocking fee. No sale and the paperwork expenses of a return, strictly because of this absurdly short rebate period, may wake CompUSA up.

I agree that the best strategy is just to wait and call them to check on the status. They'll instruct you on resubmitting. I wouldn't feel bad about that at all (and I'm one of the high-and-mighty types who yell at people for trying to take advantage for obvious price mistakes.) I have no sympathy for rebate issuers. And it's hardly fraud, since you're due the money anyway.

The postmarking game at the post office seems pretty risky, and far less of a sure thing.
