Same here. I started a thread in the Software and Applications forum when I found out. Their site a few weeks ago stated it was $14.95/year but I guess they're giving a discount for existing customers. DynU is also an option. Hope this helps.

www.zoneedit.com has been good to me! Free for some number of domains, then a charge if you need more... does all the good stuff - email forwarding, cname entries, aliasing, subdomains, etc...

One cool thing is if you have mysite.com you can setup forsale.mysite.com to go to www.mysite.com/forsale/ directly

i also use dyndns.org after dns2go started charging. Seems great so far. They also have a lot of free software to use to update your hostname to your Ip address

Thanks for the website, beamrider :)

I stopped using DNS2Go for about a year. Now I needed this type of service again for my new domain and found out that they start to charge.

I feel compelled to mention www.everydns.net which I've been using. They're FREE, but I recommend making the one-time donation of $15 to keep them free for a long time. I donated and I'm glad...

You can be a DynDNS provider with this software:
dyndnsservices.com

For a one time fee, you can own your own DynDNS service, and offer it to customers locally or on the web. I bought the software and set it up and it is much better than dyndns.org. I offer it to local customers in my city at a very low rate, and they buy it up! It is so much cheaper than a dedicated IP and they are all very happy with it. They would rather pay me and get dedicated, guaranteed support than use a free service from the internet that could be unreliable. It has been quite the money maker for me!

jblo, they say "thousands of hours" into developing the DynDNS software, and yet as soon as I started reading their page, I noticed a grammatical error. That always "red flags" things for me.

I recently started using dyndns.org because I frequently ssh into my second box, and the DHCP server here in the dorm has seemingly stopped giving computers the same IP for more than one lease period. It took maybe 30-60 minutes to figure out how to configure the Linux client that I downloaded, but it took about 10-25 mins for me to setup a second computer with the same service (a friend who's also got a secondary Linux box, who needed to be able to easily contact his Linux box). Works great for me.

Sesopedalian, I have had nothing but excellent service and support from the guys that run dyndnsservices.com. If you don't want to buy it, then don't. I was just giving my opinion. As for the grammatical errors, the program works flawlessly, and that is really all I care about. Well that and the fact that I am not stuck with BIND E.G. Crap. I have personally talked to the head programmer on several occasions, and he has always been extremely professional and helpful. He helped me get my business up and running, and he even customized several features for me at no extra cost.

I realize that this would not be ideal for everyone, as it takes a little money to get started, i.e. you have to have a Windows 2000 server, a static IP, etc...
But it really is a good business if there is a need for it in your area. Most companies I service were paying $99.00 Monthly for a static IP. I only offer the service to local customers, but if you wanted to set this up on the net, and compete with big boys, I guess you could. DynDNSservices is an established company with many large consulting firms as clients CMS Consulting for one http://www.cms.ca

What are these DNS things? How do they differ from the email and url forwarding services provided by the registrar?

They Differ in the fact that you can have a domain name pointed to your computer even if your IP address changes often. Using one of these services you do not need to update your Info each time your IP changes its all automated E.G. even if your IP address changed once a minute you could Host yourname.com on your machine without interruption in service..

I started using dyndns about two weeks ago. Works great so far. ANother alternative is tzo.com.

BTW for those who have a netgear MR314 router ( dunno if its an option in other netgear routers) there is an option for the router to update dyndns automatically whenever the ip changes. No need for third party clients etc :). I thought that was pretty kewl..

Just a heads up, but my DNS2Go client is still working :) I wonder if they have a way to keep you from using the service.
