Comcast Internet and Cable TV rates are going up effective on Feb 1st. I got the notice in the mail today.

Edit: Its going from 39.99 to almost 43 dollars a month. Ill get the exact number when I get home.
 
Whaaaaaaat?? Their Internet rates are already outrageous. They can only get away with it because we have no choice of other cable companies. I put up with it with the increase going from @Home to Comcast, but this might be too much. Time to start looking into DSL again. Grrrr...
 
Grrr...this is going to be annoying. My monthly cable bill is already $125 a month (not including modem rental, I got my own). $80ish for digital cable gold and $40 for highspeed internet....$5 in misc. taxes and fees....bastards.

If you live in the Bell South area don't even consider DSL for your home. I had Bell South DSL for almost two years and was probably not able to connect for 6 months out of that two years. Not 6 months at one time, but for 2-3 days at a time. When you call they won't admit there is an outage, they just give you the run around and try to sell you a new modem at some inflated price. I fianally dumped them and picked up Comcast cable. Havent been down once yet and the connection screams compaired to the DSL service. Bell south was charging $50/month and Comcast is still only $48.00 with the increase. Buy your own modem and it drops to $45/month. Much better service, reliability and speed...IMO
If you think you can go with Earthlink DSL or one of the other DSL providers you will still be using Bell Souths junky equipment and now if you have a problem you REALLY get the run around while they all point fingers at each other for the problem... won't do that again either! LOL
 
FYI, certain Comcast localities, including Nashville, TN & Indianapolis, IN have sublet their cable lines to other broadband ISP's, namely Juno & Netzero. These are charging $39.95/month, if you provide your own cable modem. Comcast usually also recommends signing up with Juno/Netzero for their "free" dialup accounts, for use when travelling, or as a standby in case of cable line problem.

Its actually not too bad, its split 3 ways, so I only pay for my portion of cable $25+$40 for the internet. We have like 60 channels of movies...which we really don't use that often, but its nice b/c there's usually a good movie on at any given time.

Comcast upped my cable rate this month already.. I used to pay 62 for basic digital cable bith no extras, now its about 64. What a deal 😉 Too bad I can't get directv because I'd be on that in a second.

There is no way to rationalize it you are getting robbed.

 
Funny timing for this thread... *I* also got a notice from them in the mail yesterday, telling me MY rates were going down (about $5/month). They just bought out AT&T in my area - my cable internet was about $50/month. Maybe yours was lower, and they're making us all the same? If so, THANKS! 😉

Just the opposite of you. I have been using Bellsouth residential DSL for 2 years and I have had maybe a couple hours of downtime in those 2 years but of course I threw the 3com modem in the garbage and bought a Cayman.

I guess I have to be the bad guy here, but I do work for an ISP. The basic fact of the matter is that you're already being sold 728k of bandwidth for DSL (in our case) for much less than what it's actually worth. Everyone wonders why the telecom providers are losing money.. its because the public expects our services at a low price - leaving slim to no margin. You can't stay in business if you don't make money, its just not the nature of the game. For one, I'll be perfectly happy to pay Comcast a few dollars more per month for my cable internet if it assures that the service will still exist for me to use in the coming years. Little by little, the smaller companies who're dumping service at loss or near loss prices will exit the market and we can all then price these services at what they actually cost us plus the profit we need to stay in business. It's going to happen, and if you want to see continued broadband services offered, it might be advantageous to welcome a slight increase in the price. Even if you don't LIKE paying it, weigh the possibility of your DSL or Cable internet services being dropped and having to go back to dialup. You ARE getting a lot of bandwidth for relatively little money.. if you need a refresher, take a look at ISDN pricing, or dedicated/leased lines.

I'm not trying to slam anyone here, please don't take it as such. I'd just like everyone to appreciate what exactly they're getting for their money. In fact, when Excite dropped and Comcast had to restructure its network, I didn't experience any downtime (no I don't work for them, either). I'd pay an extra $5-10/mo for that.. I mean, we all make up for that rate increase in the deals that we find in places like this 🙂

Comcast is evil.

There is no cable competition in my area. Other cities around me have a choice of Wide Open West or Comcast.. and funny thing there... Comcast has better rates in those locales and offers Digital Cable TV and Internet for a couple dollars more than I pay now for plain ole Analog cable and my cable modem.

After seeing the superior picture quality on a dish, I was ready to switch to DirecTV and keep Comcast cable because I wasn't prepared to fight with DSL again. it used to only be an additional $5 to have cable modem without tv.. and was willing to pay a little extra to get the advantages of a dish. but now they are gonna charge additional $15 if have no cable tv. They are rat bastards.
 
If you have comcast, CANCEL your internet service and drop your TV service down to basic, analog cable.
Have the ending date of your current service be a month or so away.

Comcast has a very aggressive customer-retention staff that will make you a "deal" to stay with them. If you cancel, the CSR will likely transfer you to the customer retention department to "verify" your cancellation, and they will try to convince you to stay. You don't have to lie. Just tell them the rates are too high and you are going to switch to DirectTV and/or DSL service. If you don't get transferred, someone will call you in the next couple days. If they don't for some reason, you always have time to reinstate your service.

I used to cancel every time the rates rise in my area or each time my "promotional offer" expires. The last time I did this (about a year and a half ago), I just skipped the whole cancellation thing, and just asked to be transferred to someone who could give me a better deal. It had to talk to a few different people before I got what I wanted, but I have been paying the same low rates for a year & a half. They are, however, more likely to deal on the TV service than they are on internet, unless they happen to have a special promotion going for new customers or something, then they may offer the same price to you.

My charges:
Full Digital Cable w/ box, 12 channels of HBO for $29.99 (Normally $65+ here....analog basic cable is $36)
Internet Service w/ Modem for $39.99 (Normally $45 here)
Total bill is $71.51, I think.

I got a thing in the mail a few weeks ago saying they did a system audit and found a number of customers who were being incorrectly billed and that it would be adjusted, so I figured my time was up (and rates have raised since my last change). However, I called and asked about it, and the CSR told me that my rates had been reduced because one of the "fees" was lowered. Go figure.

They are more than willing to give you a lower price, you just have to be willing to ask for it.
 
My local telco just implemented DSL .... for 39.99 a month unlimited. Ill be calling them later next week to check more into it. 😀
