not having a screen doesn't hurt shuffle sales

Shipments of iPods, over six times the year-ago level, were driven by strong response to the new iPod Shuffle, a refreshed 4GB iPod Mini and a new 6GB iPod Mini, Oppenheimer said. Apple in the quarter also lowered the price of both of its iPod Photo models.

The iPod Shuffle is now the top flash-based MP3 player in the U.S. with a 43% market share in February, Oppenheimer said, citing NPD Techworld numbers.

43%? That can't be right. It *just* came out!
I'm not at all surprized. Any product can have a new sales market share of 100% if the product is good enough in the consumer's opinion. The Shuffle is exactly what so many people wanted - a cheap way to play only music that you like.

For February.

Ok. Gotcha. But still, damn...for a new product to have a launch like that, with soo many other players on the market, simply amazing to me.

IMO there is not that great of competition in that market. im not saying the shuffle is worth its marketshare though. brand names go a looooong way.

but nothing but respect for apple and their marketing.. even if i will probably never own the product

it's just a trend... some stupid person buys it... and he or she doesn't wanna admit that they wasted their money..so they just recommend to their friends.. and so on... bleh, i have to have LCD whatsoever

I dont need nor want a screen on my workout mp3 player. PLUs it has rechargable battery. It is EXACTLY what I need.

Apple's business model is pure genius. While I wouldn't touch their products with a 10 foot pole, I'd buy their stock without a second thought.

I agree. I love the article '43% share of flash-based music players' so in this really tiny niche market which we own only one of two products available we have 43% of the market. It reminds me of a documentary I saw the other day where at the end is said something like 'blank is the highest grossing documentary*' then it said * excluding all other documentaries, Imax films, and tv shows. I was like what? So basically its NOT the highest grossing but you wanted to say that so you put the *. Marketing people should be shot.

Nope, sounds about right. I sell mp3 players at Circuit City, and the ipod shuffles sell the best. 512mb for $99.99 just can't be beat. The LCDs on flash-based players are essentially useless - unless they have an FM tuner. All they show is the song being played, which you should know anyway, or could easily figure out, the volume, which you don't need to know on an LCD, and battery level, which is semi-important. On most of the flash-based players you can't get a list of all the songs you have on the device (like 3 per line), which would be the only real function of an LCD on a flash player. The one thing that the LCDs are good for are the FM tuner function, to see what station you are on. The Ipod shuffle doesn't have an FM tuner. so it doesn't need an lcd. Because the ipod shuffle doesn't have an fm tuner and an lcd, they can sell it for cheaper.

There are hundreds and hundreds of other flash players out there.

Why would you need a screen for a player that can hold a gig of music max? Maybe I'm weird, but for almost all of my songs(~100 gigs) I can hear the first seconds and know the artist and title.

Now for anything bigger I would want a screen for navigation.

teenage/young girls want the fashionable and cool shuffle, form over features. atleast that's what i've seen from observations at retail electronic stores so far.

Car buyer: "But it doesn't have a steering wheel, that will kind of make driving difficult won't it?

Steve Jobs: "No way man! We designed it that way on purpose. It makes things interesting and makes every time you get in the car a spontaneous experience. You never know where you are going to go. Live life to the fullest and enjoy the randomnomity of where the car takes you".

I love my shuffle
so convenient, the battery seems to last forever, there is no other MP3 player I would rather prefer

I can believe it. I must have seen two billion ads for the Shuffle during the NCAA tournament (I know that was in March, but still).
