He said they needed someone for their Health information systems. Can I use my cisco networking skills in that setup or do I have to learn something else now?

Him being a modern progressive really has nothing to do with political affiliation. It has more to do with the "gimme gimme me me me" mindset that so many of you broadcast nowadays.

You've done a lot of assisting, which reads as: didn't do it, but was there when it happened. Give real examples of what you did and how it impacted and on what scale that impact was.

And, in this economy, expect like 1 call for every 30-40 resumes sent out. Perhaps try an IT recruiter. They are pretty much awful people, but they can help you find a job. Just be ready to change your phone number and give them an email address you don't want to ever use again. You will never stop hearing from them and their kind.

Long story short, if you fit the skills a company is looking for, and you know how to present yourself, you'll get opportunities. Now, you may go out there being a guy who just wants A job. But you're MUCH better off being a guy out there who wants THIS job. IE - Cater your resume to the position being offered. If the position speaks of Cisco routing/switch/etc, suggest that you wish to focus on Cisco networking topology. If you want to be a virtualization guy, put it in your resume.

Point being, you don't have A resume that you send out to 40 companies. You need to have a resume that you start with and re-purpose for A company.

You probably got pretty lucky then or have a very specific skill set for a very specific job. I applied to quite a few places and had interviews with quite a few, but I was applying as a general software developer.

This. I interviewed with 3 companies in August and got 3 offers. I interviewed with another for lulz about a month ago and got that offer too. The jobs are out there if you have the skills.
