I think today I just failed two midterms, does that mean my college career is finished?
Last quarter my average gpa is 2.9.
Can anyone "been there done that" advise this poor fellow....

been there, done that. Just make sure you pull a 3.5+ next semester. It'll average out. Hell, you are a FRESHMAN dude...you have THREE years worth of classes to make up for that.

I graduated with a 3.7gpa and I wasn't someone who did everything possible to get that extra point. I read the book, went to class, did my homework. If I didn't know something I didn't hesitate to ask. Wether it was staying after class, e-mailing or calling the professor, or stopping in during office hours. My weakness was I didn't study enough for tests. If I had I'd probably have graduated with a near 4.0gpa.
Failing midterms isn't the end of the world. It does mean you're going to have to work very hard to get a decent grade in those classes.
Don't spend your weekends partying and drinking. Try to read the textbook before going to class. If you don't know something ask the Professor or the TA's.
I forget where I heard it and don't know if I have it right but the saying is, He who asks a question is a fool for 5 minutes, He who doesn't ask a question is fool always.

2.9 is pretty damn good if you ask me. not excellent but good considering all the "other" activities that can be distracting you. They say on average you lose 1 full point on your GPA going from HS to college. That was true for me.

My freshman year in college, first quarter I had a 3.2, next quarter, i got a 1.5. haha i thought i was all badass so i stopped studying that quarter. I was then put on Subject to Dismissal, which is one step worse than Academic Probation, since my GPA was a 1.5 or less. Oh the college years. I was scared shitless after that and ended up with something like a 2.8 out of college.

ok...

Tell me why these two statements don't seem to work together? Showing up to class and doing the homework every day puts you in the top 10% of people doing everything possible to get extra points.

2.9 is pretty good depending on your school and major. :)

Failing 2 midterms, however, is not.

I've been there, done that...changed my major. Might want to consider other fields of study.

2.9?

I'm sitting at a 2.83, as a Sophomore trying my hardest to graduate with a degree in Physics in 2005.

IIRC, cut off for grad school (at least masters programs) is at a 3.0. Any possible way for me to get in < 3?

I am like intimidated by tests now. I prepared, went into calss thinking it's a walk in the park. But when I read through the midterm, my mind just went blank.

The average gpa to admit to uw's business school was around 3.65. It seems I am not going to get in with these grades. I feel pretty despair at the moment.

Who's fault was it? Yours or your professor's? In college, a good professor can make or break you. Sometimes you get a good professor, sometimes not. Maybe you need to switch schools if there arn't any professors that teach in a way that you can really understand.

Being a freshman at one time, everything was so fast. Now that Im a junior, I can look back and say its was a piece of cake and I wish I could start over. Its a learning process. I got a 2.5 GPA my first quarter, 2.2 next quarter, to be followed by a 3.83. Just hang in there.

hah! i had a 1.2 gpa after my first semester! didnt know i had an english final (can u believe that?) and was just not studying at all.

my second semester, i took some easy classes, try to find out what they are from other people...i took a seminar class that was based on attendance only! (A), got a good grade in my ROTC class (B+), and worked hard at my other two classes.

if your school has a 2.0 gpa minimum after the first year, you should be concerned with just getting above that and not trying to prove something.
try signing up for summer school and sign up for a class or two...it's easier if your course load is lighter.

the main thing is just having discipline though...dont know what your situation is, but if youre not studying hard enough for some reason, find out what it is and eliminate it ( girlfriend, computer games, friends who party too much, etc.). it isn't the end of your life, i had a friend who had to drop out, but went on to transfer to community college and has a fat job now.

I have been going to community college for nearly 4 years so you can take pride in knowing that you are doing better than some people.

Class averages for low division courses are generally rather low. Don't worry about it, I"d say you're doing fine for first year.

oh, btw for real advice....

i advise you to figure out why you are doing poorly (sorry, but i disagree with others have said... 2.9 is kind of poor). are you really working hard, but simply can't make the cut? if so, perhaps consider taking fewer classes. are you unable to focus? lack of motivation? once you find the cause, develop a solution, and work hard at making it happen.

2.9 is good? It's not terrible, but i would not call it good. If you were 2 years into engineering, then i would say ok, that's decent, but right into yoru first year of college, ouch. ANyways, don't worry. While a 2.9 is not exactly great, you are probably better off than other college kids. It's your first year, don't sweat it. You are still gettign used to college. No one is expecting you to get a 4.0. If youfail yoru midterm, don't sweat it, Just make up for it on the final.

You guys are weird....
2.9 correspond to a B- average, which actually starts at 2.75, so it is not poor at all....
What is wrong with a B- average? Hugh?
I have 2.8 GPA, majoring in CS btw..
Please refer from the comments like that. In my situation (working student here, with no family support at all) this GPA is quite an achievement...

Edit: 3.0 = B = Good... Therefore Good != Poor....

Edit2: UncleWai, you are not finished at all, you might just take some extra classes over the summer to catch up. Do not ever give up the college. It might take you longer to finish your degree, you even might chage the major, but eventually you will finish...
Good luck, what is your major btw?
