Not bad! Barracuda IV 40gb 7200 - 77 bucks...

newegg.com actually has 20G, 40G, 60G and 80G available.

Search for Barracuda from the home page

I bought one of the 80's a while back... nice.

be warned though, these barracuda drives get REALLY hot, makign an HD cooler almost a neccesity. So adding an HD cooler basically cancels out the quietness of the drive. You're probably better off getting a Maxte D740x series drive.

i'm running the 80 gb version of this drive in my enermax case (same as the antex 10xx) with a panaflo L1A on the hard drive cage. the hard drive has always been cool to the touch, and the hard drive and panaflo are definately quieter than most any solution out there.

that's my opinion tho... there may be ppl out there whose hard drives are much hotter, though i doubt it.

I purchased this exact model from Newegg a few months ago and can honestly say it is the best HDD I have ever owned. it's fast, rather cheap, and very, very quiet (my Enermax power supply makes more noise!). don't know about how hot it gets cause it's in my case not to be touched... this is one of the few products I would buy again as opposed to trying something new.

bottom line: highly recommended.

I have used an older 7200 rpm SCSI version of the Barracuda, and did not have any problem with one drive... but when I added a second drive (in a standard case bracket, about 1/8" spacing), both drives got too hot to touch. Luckily I discovered the situation before they fried and failed.

I used some "mending plates" from the hardware store to hang one of the drives about an inch below the other, and arranged a fan removed from a CPU heat sink (like the $1.00 specials from directron.com) to blow between the drives. This solved the problem completely.

I don't know, I was just recommending a hd for a friend of mine and I did some reading on 40gb drives. The reviews I read said the Barracuda was very quiet in comparison to comparable the Maxtor, WD, and IBM hds. One comparison I read warned about the IBM drive(either the GXP75 or GXP60 whichever is the newer one) overheating, but didn't mention that problem with the Barricuda at all. He ended up getting the 60 GB drive on the dell deal for 114 shipped I think.

this hd is soooooooooo quiet. you know how usually when you start your computer, you can hear the hard drive working... can't hear a thing. seriously... maybe it's because i have a sunflower fan which is pretty loud, but i tried putting my ear next to the hard drive and still didn't hear much.

oh... i think fry's had a better deal about 3 weeks ago... but if you missed the fry's deal... this is alright.

PM w/ Amex...or

BUY IT HERE FOR $72!!! 😀

tho...some ppl H8 the compgeeks...I must say, I've had alright service the ONE time I've ordered there. 🙂
(credit to techbargains - not that I visited it, but I head that it might have been on their frontpage) 😀 hehehehe

God Bless

I just bought a 60 GB version of this drive to replace an aging IBM 75GXP that started to crap out. I had the sides of my case off for several days and ran my system full bore. My Barracuda does not get very hot (moderately warm); it's definitely cooler to the touch than my IBM and NOTICEABLY quieter (and I thought that the IBMs were quiet!). I don't think you need any special cooling for it unless your case is cramped. The drive seems to be every bit as fast as the 46 GB IBM 75GXP from what I'm observing. I paid 99.95 for it at a local Fry's Electronics that also came with a 25.00 rebate.

Seagate has, so far, earned my trust...

This drive just came in some dells we got in @ work. The fastest drive i have ever seen. You can really see the speed in real world apps and while viewing the defrag in Win98, the blocks just fly around.

Use these in the new HP Vectra's at work, love em, not sure about heat but as some of you know vectra's have next to no cooling in them. Also the SCSI models do get really HOT, but the'll live through it, I wouldguess seagate knows about the heat from testing and the circuitry is tolerane, Have 4 of the SCSI ones, running from 4 years straight to 2 years straight, ne'er an issue with em. These drives are fast and very quiet. Bump for my favorite drives ever.

Do you actually OWN the drive? I have seen this criticism from a few posters and a hack review, but I own four of these with an LA1 fan that keeps them almost cold to the touch. Other objective reviews have found them only MARGINALLY warmer than other drives.

THis is by far the best drive I have ever owned.

There is one important caveat with these drives. They will not function properly in a Raid 0 array. I bought a couple of the 60 GBs last week as refurbs from Newegg to use for Raid in my 8K7A+, only to find that they suffer decreased performance when used for Raid 0. Apparently, Seagate has been aware of this issue for several months, but it appears that they do not intend to offer a solution - other than return for refund...see this thread Slow Barracuda in Raid 0.

Otherwise, they appear to be great drives...

Just for an update (doesn't need its own thread), I got this drive from Dell yesterday for $80.99 with next-day shipping. This is thanks to the 10% off and free shipping offer 🙂

[edit] I already have the 60gig IV in my tower, and I grabbed this one for my fiancee's computer. It had a whiny Maxtor and it was driving us nuts!
