Ok, finshed Doom iii (What a waste of an awesome game engine), HL2 (my 3rd favorite game this year), Thief - Deadly Shadows (#2), DeuSex- IW (#4), Max Payne's Fall (#5) and the superb Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (my #1 GotY) . . . .

as you can see, i prefer FPS. ;)

So, WHAT's neXt? :p

Prefer Bargain bin :)
. . . i am cheap

on a whim - and not knowing what i was doing - I picked up the original Star Wars: KOTR . . . partly based on enthusiastic 'reviews' here . . . . how "heavy" of a RPG is it? i just could NOT get into Balder's Gate or the Vampire: Masquerade/Redemption.
i got it today for $19 and it is unopened (i can return it) . . . .

What about OTHER SW games (fps, please)? How about Jedi Knight:eek:utcast . . . . is there a "anytime save" feature?

i tried Red Faction - the original - and found i am SPOILED by the latest game's gfx . . . so i prefer something from '03 at the earliest. . . . . UNopened are Tomb Raider:AOD and TC's Rainbow 6 -3/Ravenshield . . . . worth a play?
Finally, i have 007: Nightfire for PC . . .. any good?

Anything else?

(i am also waiting for a new retail copy of FC to drop sub$20 it's 'there' at a few retailers, but none near where i live) :(

What the hell is this?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II with Bonus!

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II

With bonus?

* The Sith Lords is the next chapter to Knights of the Old Republic; winner of more than 35 "Game of The Year Awards" featuring an all-new and perilous storyline set approximately 4,000 years before Star Wars Episode I.

* All-new Force powers, weapons, locations, characters and classes add to the richness of this next epic installment.
* Choose from three different classes of Jedi to start the game with access to specific Jedi abilities.

* Choose the light or the dark side of the Force based on your characters actions as you progress through the story. The choices you make not only affect your character, but also those in your party, and those who may join you in your quest.

* Cameo appearances from memorable characters of the first game enhance the continuity and story flow through this unique time period.

* Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the development house founded by members of the Fallout, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Dark Alliance, and Planescape: Torment teams.

Is this a new one or just an expansion? (ships Feb 8)

latest edit: looks like a new KOTOR TWO

This thread is a coincedence. I'm playing JK2: Jedi Outcast and I'm really enjoying it.

It's actually the 2nd time I gave it a try. I absolutely loved the first Jedi Knight game, but didn't enjoy this one when it first came out a couple years ago.

The game has some small flaws (ie, dynamic crosshair) and starts off slow. But once you start getting some of the better weapons, force powers, and the lightsaber, it's pretty dang fun.

And yes, you can save anytime in Jedi Outcast (and highly recommended) as the automatic checkpoints are few and far between. :)

Thanks . . . . So, JK2, Jedi Outrcast is the one to get? i imagine the original's gfx is not up-to-par
(remember i am 'spoiled' . . . a highly modified Q3 engine is about as minimal gfx as i want to play anymore).

i think SW: KOTR is going back to the store . . . . i have been "burned" - my fault - by not being able to get 'into' RPGs (OTOH, DeuSex and DE: IW were no problem for me).

Yeah, don't get the first JK if you don't like 1998 graphics. :) This is one of favorite all-time games. The graphics are old, but I love the gameplay and I still play the game.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (1998)

The sequel, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast came out in 2002 and uses a modified Q3 engine. The graphics are very nice and probably one of the best looking games that use the Q3 engine.

i have tried other types . . . . but i do not have the patience for RPGs (or RTSes) . . . . Even "Sacrifice" i found annoying. OTOH, DeusEx-type games - with stealth and elements of rpg are quite enjoyable.

Because i have slow dial-up, multi is OUT (unfortunately). :(

Thanks for the tip on Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast. it IS bargain bin and i will likely 'trade' KOTR for it. :)

and what about Tomb Raider:AOD, TC's Rainbow 6 -3/Ravenshield . . . 007: Nightfire for PC worth a play? I actually have these games (from HW bundles. ;)

I have R6:3 Raven Shield - IMHO, graphics are great (especially when compared to Rogue Spear)...it's definitely entertaining, but it's really easy to die..maybe a little too realistic for some people. I like it, though :p

I've not played Jedi Academy, but I think it's very similar to Jedi Outcast, except the battles are more suited toward lightsaber and force battles instead of typical FPS gunfights. It's also got some interesting multiplayer modes (I assume it has bots like Jedi Outcast does) according to the review below.

thanks . . . are they comparing Academy's gfx to the original JK: Jedi Outcast or JKII:JO?

they concluded:
+Decent story
+ Nice options
+ Two new multiplayer modes
+ Sweet, classic Jedi action
- That we saw in Outcast
- Slightly dated graphics
- Mostly useless weapons

So it's the Q3 engine? :p
(ok, that's my minimum, nowadays . . . . but i guess i'll start with the JK II: Jedi Outkast.)

Jedi Academy is OK ... but RavenShield (if you're patient & tactical) is great. Definitely not run-n-gun.

Since i already have TC's Rainbow 6 RavenShield, i will give it a try (the reviews - including here - have been 'mixed). . . . i'm not too patient but really like the Thief series. ;)

anyone want to weigh in on 007:Nightfire or Tomb Raider: AOD?
(i won't have to buy them) :)

anyway, thanks for your help in making up my mind . . . . i'm off to work and to eXchange a game (KOTR for JK2:JO unless i can find FC for cheap)

Hi Mark,

Well, looks like I'm too late as you may already be off. I played both Outcast and KoTOR. KoTOR, although RTS are something I don't usually play, I found quite good, especially after the begining. It has a lot of replay value as well (Light-side/Dark-side).

You finished Doom3? I'm guessing you found that to be a chore

yeah . . . . late :(
(but welcome!) :)

Yeah . . . finishing Diii was a major pain . . . . i played the entire part from hell to through End Boss in one long sitting (the Soul Cube made it stupidly easy . . . . and i beat the CyberpussyDemon in one try) . . . . thanks for the thumbsup on KoTOR . . . . but i am TOO old to change - i just say 'NO!' to RTS/RPG games (unless they are 'lite' like DeuSex).
:D

KOTOR has returned . . .

(. . . to the store +$19.95 back to me)

and i now have JK II, J-Outkast
(-$9.95 in the Jewel Case . . . . packed just like HL2) :p

i just installed it - it is OLD ('02) . . . . just ONE cd :p

anway, it is the Q3 engine (gag) and plays with zero slowdowns on my 9800xt with everything 'on' and 'max' and full AA/AF and vsynch and . . . . no opinions on the gameplay yet . . . .

. . . but from what i hear, it's a good idea to keep a walkthrough handy for some of the obscure puzzles . . . . probably 'keep me' till FC hits the Bargain Bin (thanks but NO used copies . . . . i prefer retail) . . . .

and then Painkiller (surprised no one mentioned it - should be bargain bin too)

. . . . and still NO comments on 007 Nightfire or Tomb Raider: AOD?

thanks again!

While JK:Jedi Outcast is a great game, you really should've given KOTOR a chance. If you don't have the patience for a Baulder's Gate type epic, KOTOR is a good choice. Good gameplay, graphics, and very open-ended. I finished it over the course of about 5 sessions (long ones while working in a third world country).

Didn't like Raven shield, for whatever reason. Nice game and my roommate and I played in Coop mode a lot, but ultimately unsatisfying. The online game really sucked...too much like counterstrike for me.

Jedi Academy isn't very good, and not worth the time. Tomb Raider: AOD is no good either. Haven't played it myself but my roomate has (for about 2 hours before he quit). You could also try Return to Castle Wolfenstein (the original, not Enemy Territory) if you're looking for a single player FPS.

thanks for your insight. i have come to several conclusions re my gaming that i am getting old(er) and really have NOT the patience for for games that preclude everything else in my life. . . . RPGs simply take too much time (compared to even the most involving FPS) . . . .

. . . and i won't be playing multi . . . damn dialup - :p :( . . . . so i pretty much need a good single player game

i DID like the original RtCW's rather long single player campaign (and am looking forward to Part II) . . . .
i was just looking for suggestions to fill in my time while waiting for new games (STALKER/FEAR/Serious Sam II/etc.) and also while waiting for games i don't want to pay full price for (as they are 'near' bargain bin already) like FC and Painkiller.

Anyway, i DO have JKII:JO and - although the graphics are pretty dated - seems interesting enough. :)

Hey Mark,

I think you're fine with the games you got. There are several SW games and I sometime have trouble remembering which games I have played  But I enjoyed 'em. Let's say they're easier to finish than D3 ;)

Down the road, rethink KoTOR. It's not like any other RTS/RPG I've played. It looks alot like an FPS, and gives you "moral" choices like DE as well as character improvements. Albeit these are mostly done through new/enhanced force powers (in DE you get biomod upgrade for enhanced healing/med, in KoTOR it's enhanced "force-healin", pretty similar to me).

In fact, it plays so much like a FPS shooter that my nephew tried to play it like one while I stood by LMAO. In KoTOR, when you're in combat, the characters rspond themselves (shooting, throwing grenades etc- actually they do respond to the commands you give them) - he thought he needed to aim etc for them and couldn't figure out why the controls/keyboard was fvcked up.

KoTOR neither looks nor plays like any RTS/RPG I've played and it does have some similarities to DE which is prolly why I liked it so much.

Regarding Painkiller, I just got this (and BOH expansion pack) for Xmas and have been enjoying it so far. It's an almost mindless (gotta find those secret areas and Holy secrets/icons) FPS, like I thought D3 w/b. Plays real smooth with good graphics and nice sounds too.

Have a nice weekend,

Fern

Definitely JK2 and JA. Both are bargain bin games and I rate both 10/10. And yes, definitely full quicksave/quickload support in addition to checkpoint and level autosaves.
