I'll try the link, but when I chose "option 1" to specify "GeForce" and "900 series" etc., the download wouldn't work. Maybe it had something to do with the "GeForce Experience" installation -- I can't say.

[30 seconds later . . ] Huh. Fancy that. Suddenly, the download link doesn't seem broken.

So I'm turning this over in my mind. The UPS software shows about 85W at the "wall" (or UPS) when the system idles. Running Kombustor to load up both GPU's can push the wattage as high as 560W measured the same way, of which about 60W is CPU wattage. Supposin' I decided to run Linpack side by side with Kombustor, that would increase the package watts to 140, so add 80W to 560. If my PSU is 90% efficient, than I'm really using 640W X 0.9 = ~ 576W under that hypothetical, less likely scenario. And if I just push the core speed of the 970's up another 100Mhz, it adds another 25W.

I really think I want a bigger PSU for this, but I could also take my time. This is a 650W Seasonic. Moral of the story: If you're going to even THINK about 2x SLI, you should pick your PSU at the beginning with that intention. This one? I'd purchased for Mom's "new computer," and at 89, folks aren't eager for "change."

I guess it all keeps me busy.

Funny.

Well on your power supply theory a person would have to cover all their bases from the getgo. Carefully selecting a motherboard with enough pci-e slots with proper spacing, a case that is large enough with really good airflow, etc. Guessing a person could wind up spending a couple hundred bucks just in case....No pun intended.

Well, we solved my "problem" here, but I can't resist further comment. I have a lot of "theories," some are "psychological."

"Controlled Hardware Addiction:" Enthusiasts plan their builds carefully, nevertheless.

Underlying "Controlled Addiction" is an "impulse" component. I went through a year of telling myself that buying a 3-year-old 2700K was a waste; I told myself this was "addictive behavior." Like the recovering tobacco addict who visits his friend's smoke-shop weekly just to "shoot the s***," I kept visiting web-sites and "window shopping" when everyone was looking at Haswell and DC.

The damn processor was supposed to go into my sig-rig! Then, I went on a detour looking for a Z68 or Z77 board, and found a "corporate refurbished" Z68/Gen 3 for $85. [Maybe one couldn't do as well scoring a packet of heroin on the street.]

THEN! I thought about my project planned for "next year." "Why not get the graphics now, and play with them in this rig?" I thought. [Addicts make all sorts of rationalizations . . . ]

I'm still looking at the PSU. I find reviews of other units (for instance, an XFX Black Pro -- a rebadged Seasonic) showing that being "rated" at X watts is one thing, but the XFX example showed a 750W XFX able to provide 951W with efficiency still at 84% before shutting down above that limit. And the XFX (rebranded Seasonic "X") was released in 2012!!

Given my untreated behaviors, I'm not sure I should be so quick to replace the 650. I still keep coming up with a maximum power-draw estimate of about 560W for this box -- not too likely to occur in real usage. Setting up an OC profile for the 970's probably won't hurt anything, either.

And overclocking -- by itself -- may be an addiction, but it should cost less! In "theory!"

I guess I'm just shameless -- wearing it "on my sleeve" as an "open-book!"
