Not able to install anything!

I'm running Windows 2000 w/SP4 and my drivers installed and I cant install any applications. All my executables have some error(when run) or the other....I cant install WinRAR, Winamp, DirectX ...the list goes on to other applications....the error always happens during extraction...can anyone tell me why this is happening? My temp folders are all empty and I cant think of any other reason why this is happening...

virus maybe?

Once, I accidentally managed to associate my .exe filetype to a dictionary program that I have installed. That was nuts. ANY program that I ran would end up loading through WordWeb (the dictionary program).
